Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY: In a training situation, coordinates and provides indirect services to patients on a nursing unit. Performs clerical duties, which require considerable knowledge of computerized information processing. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Works under the direction of a Nurse Manager, Registered Nurse or designee.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High school graduate and/or GED equivalent
  2. Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  3. Enrolled in a Health Unit Coordinator program -OR- a Nursing Assistant certificate program within three (3) months of hire.
  4. Ability to communicate clearly, distinctly and effectively, write neatly and legibly; neat, personal appearance.
  5. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with personnel, physicians, volunteers, visitors, patients and the public.

Incumbents will be allocated to Grade 116 after successful completion of at least one (1) year as Health Unit Coordinator Trainee and a Health Unit Coordinator program -OR- Nursing Assistant certificate program.

Allocation to Grade 116 and continued employment is contingent upon completion of a Health Unit Coordinator program -OR- Nursing Assistant certificate program within two (2) years.

All duties performed are done so in a training situation in which the employee is learning the necessary techniques of a Health Unit Coordinator.

  1. Responsible for documentation and maintenance of patient's records on assigned unit.
  2. Inventories, requisitions, receives and maintains equipment and complete supplies on unit assigned; enters stock supply into information system; requests special orders, additional supplies and equipment maintenance as needed.
  3. Acts as receptionist in assigned area, answers telephone and patient call lights courteously; gives staff, physicians and visitors prompt and accurate information.
  4. Performs clerical duties for assigned unit, enters patient information and other pertinent data into computerized information system as required; completes necessary forms and maintains medical records.
  5. Prepares requests for laboratory, radiology or other services/treatments as warranted by physician's orders; follows up to see that requests are received and completed; obtains data as directed; notifies appropriate party of results obtained.
  6. Reports staffing and attendance in assigned areas as required.
  7. Processes communication, maintains bulletin board and distributes mail on assigned unit.
  8. Routinely assesses unit to maintain a satisfactory physical environment, reports problems and needs to appropriate party in a timely manner.
  9. Performs other services or errands as directed; i.e. delivers specimens to laboratory, medication orders to pharmacy.
  10. Attends education/developmental programs as assigned.
