Job description

City of Alton - Now Hiring: Cleanup Crew Member

Season Dates: 6-Month Seasonal Position
Pay: $18.00 per hour
Job Type: Seasonal
Location: In person - throughout public areas in the City of Alton


Position Overview:

The Cleanup Crew Member helps keep Alton clean and welcoming by supervising community service volunteers and performing hands-on tasks in public areas such as streets, parks, sidewalks, and other city-owned spaces. This role also supports the Forestry Crew and may involve hauling or operating trailers.


Schedule:

  • 30 hours per week
  • Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday
  • Hours: 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Schedules may vary based on project needs


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate tasks for community service volunteers
  • Clean and maintain public areas (parks, streets, sidewalks, etc.)
  • Assist Forestry Crew with maintenance tasks as needed
  • Safely operate hand tools, small equipment, or trailers (experience preferred)
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of equipment and workspaces
  • Report hazards or maintenance issues to supervisors
  • Follow all safety guidelines and city procedures
  • Support city-sponsored events or cleanup initiatives when required
  • Represent the City of Alton in a professional and courteous manner
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old & currently hold a valid Illinois driver's License throughout the duration of your employment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Prior experience operating trailers or maintenance equipment is a plus
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently
  • Punctuality and reliability are essential


Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Outdoor work in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain)
  • Ability to walk, lift, bend, and stand for extended periods
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs as needed
  • Safely operate tools and vehicles in public spaces
  • Interact respectfully with the public, volunteers, and city staff

Reports To: Public Works Supervisor or Cleanup Crew Lead
