Classical Dance information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Classical Dancer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Classical Dancer, you need a solid foundation in dance technique, musicality, and performance, often gained through formal training or a degree in dance. Mastery of specific dance forms (such as ballet, Bharatanatyam, or Kathak), familiarity with stage makeup, and the ability to interpret choreography are typically required. Discipline, perseverance, and expressive communication are crucial soft skills that set outstanding dancers apart. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering compelling performances, adapting to demanding routines, and sustaining a long-term dance career.

What is classical dance?

Classical dance refers to traditional dance forms that have been passed down through generations and are characterized by codified techniques, structured movements, and expressive storytelling. These dances often have deep cultural, spiritual, or historical significance and are performed to classical music specific to their region. Examples include ballet from the West, and Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Odissi from India. Classical dance demands rigorous training and discipline, with a strong emphasis on technique, form, and artistry.

What are some common challenges faced by classical dance professionals in maintaining their physical and artistic performance over time?

Classical dance professionals often face challenges such as preventing injuries due to repetitive movement, maintaining physical endurance, and continuously refining their technique. Additionally, staying artistically inspired while meeting the high standards of traditional choreography can be demanding. Dancers usually collaborate closely with instructors, choreographers, and other dancers to overcome these challenges and sustain long-term careers. Regular practice, cross-training, and ongoing education are essential parts of their routine to ensure both physical well-being and artistic growth.

Job description

NorthPointe Dance Academy is seeking a high-caliber Ballet Instructor to lead our competitive and pre-professional students. We aren’t just looking for someone to teach "steps"—we want a mentor who understands that ballet is the essential foundation for every elite dancer.

The ideal candidate possesses a deep technical knowledge of classical syllabi (Vaganova, Cecchetti, or ABT), a sharp eye for alignment, and the ability to inspire a generation of dancers to strive for technical perfection and artistic grace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Elite Technical Training: Execute rigorous ballet classes for competitive students (ages 8–18), focusing on placement, turnout, strength, and extension.
  • Pointe Work: Safely guide students through the transition to pointe and provide advanced instruction in pointe technique and variations.
  • Competition Choreography: Conceptualize and choreograph award-winning ballet and lyrical/contemporary ballet pieces for regional and national competitions.
  • Foundation Building: Ensure a consistent technical vocabulary across all levels to prepare students for the demands of jazz, contemporary, and acro.
  • Progress Tracking: Provide constructive, individualized feedback and formal evaluations to help dancers meet their personal and competitive goals.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional Pedigree: A Bachelor’s degree in Dance OR professional company performance experience.
  • Proven Track Record: Experience teaching in a competitive studio environment with a history of high-scoring entries or student placements in reputable summer intensives/colleges.
  • Technical Expertise: Mastery of classical terminology and a comprehensive understanding of anatomy and injury prevention.
  • The "NorthPointe" Spirit: A high-energy, disciplined, and professional demeanor. You must be able to command a room while remaining an approachable mentor.

Preferred Skills

  • Certification in a recognized syllabus (e.g., ABT® National Training Curriculum, RAD).
  • Experience in Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) or Pilates for Dancers.
  • Ability to teach supplemental styles (Leaps & Turns, Contemporary, or Stretch/Strength).
