Job description

Claims Manager is responsible for the successful management of executive and employment liability claims / litigation matters for the System.This includes claims involving Atlantic Health System medical centers, subsidiaries, affiliates, employees, patients, board members and other related parties.

  • Overall responsibility and management for Directors & Officers and Employment Practices Liability claims against all applicable parties
  • Review new claims and/or summons and complaint
  • Prepare memorandum summarizing claim including recommendations for disposition and need to assign outside counsel
  • Investigate incidents with relevant parties to the claim and internal departments (human resources, legal, compliance, etc.)
  • Assign cases to outside counsel where appropriate
  • Meet as required with outside counsel regarding case status and strategy, providing guidance and authority for settlement
  • Manage relationships with outside counsel, ensuring their compliance with AHS Claims Handling Guidelines
  • Secure all discovery for assigned defense counsel responsive to litigation requests.
  • Attend pertinent defendant and witness depositions
  • Attend arbitration and mediation and support defense counsel in case resolution
  • Review defense counsel litigation reports and assist in strategic defense of the case
  • Research and recommend settlement and verdict values
  • Overall trial responsibility, including coordination of witness/defendant appearances
  • Responsible for planning and preparation of claim summaries at internal committee meetings
  • Manage claims exclusively via the electronic claims management system
  • Communicate internally on issues identified through litigation and support development of corrective action plans
