What is a civil manager?

Civil Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and coordinating civil engineering projects, which may include infrastructure development, construction, and maintenance of public works such as roads, bridges, and buildings. They manage teams of engineers, contractors, and other staff to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Civil Managers also handle project planning, resource allocation, regulatory compliance, and communication with stakeholders. Their role is crucial in ensuring that civil engineering projects run smoothly and meet all safety and legal requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Manager, you need a solid background in civil engineering, strong project management skills, and a relevant degree or professional certification such as PMP or PE. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, MS Project, and construction management systems is typically required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help coordinate teams and engage stakeholders effectively. These skills ensure the successful delivery of projects on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and quality standards.

How does a civil manager typically coordinate with other departments on large-scale construction projects?

A Civil Manager plays a central role in ensuring smooth collaboration between engineering, procurement, and construction teams on major projects. Civil Engineer ($84,725.47 - $118,687.71)
Under general supervision, a Civil Engineer performs professional civil engineering work including design layout and plan review. In addition, the Civil Engineer may supervise the work performed by technical or paraprofessional Engineering staff. The Civil Engineer classification is the entry-level class within the professional engineering career ladder. Assignments in Development Services, Engineering, and Water Resources provide opportunity for the application of independent judgment and initiative in the design, management, and review of projects. This class performs related duties as required.
Work is performed under the direct supervision and guidance of a registered engineer, who instructs the Civil Engineer in practices of project management, engineering methodologies, and engineering principles. Work is reviewed through meetings, conferences, inspections, and results achieved. The Civil Engineer class differs from the Senior Civil Engineer class by the latter having registration in the State of Arizona as a Civil Engineer and performing more difficult and varied professional engineering work assignments with minimal direct supervision. Some employees in this class may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Senior Civil Engineer upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements of performance and registration as a Professional (Civil) Engineer in the State of Arizona. This class is FLSA exempt-professional.
Senior Civil Engineer ($98,070.75 - $137,385.25)
A Senior Civil Engineer, under general supervision, performs advanced responsible professional engineering work. Employees in this class perform the full range of professional engineering tasks. In addition, a Senior Civil Engineer directs and reviews the work performed by lower-level professional and paraprofessional engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors, etc. Assignments are broad in scope and require the use of independent judgment and initiative in making technical decisions of considerable difficulty.
A Senior Civil Engineer may specialize in a particular field (example: storm drainage, sewer and water, roadways, special improvement districts, construction administration, etc.) and act as the City's technical expert in that field. Some employees may progress to this class by noncompetitive promotion upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements of performance and registration as a Professional (Civil) Engineer in the State of Arizona. This class performs related duties as required and is FLSA exempt-professional.
