Overview
Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft's cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world's largest online services.

The Senior Civil Engineer will serve as a Civil Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) for data center programming, design development, design, construction administration, renovations, retrofits, master planning, site due diligence, and operations-related technical design guidance and support. This position will provide civil engineering technical direction and oversight for AMERS-region data center designs and will engage with key Microsoft stakeholders, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), and external A/E consultant teams and general contractors that specialize in data center designs and builds to ensure that Microsoft's data center civil engineering and site infrastructure design and quality standards are met. The successful candidate will provide civil engineering technical direction, oversight, and design and construction review for new data center campus designs, builds, leases, retrofits, and renovations in addition to technical support for site selection, due diligence, master planning and permitting.
The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for the facilitation and delivery of Microsoft's industry-leading data center designs including the development of innovative technology and advanced civil engineering and sustainable design concepts to be used as the basis for current and next generation data center designs, retrofits, and renovations. This role will provide technical direction, decision-making, and overall technical leadership for all civil engineering aspects of Microsoft's data center portfolio.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with internal Microsoft and external stakeholders to provide civil engineering technical direction to deliver projects aligned with defined civil engineering, site and infrastructure design and performance criteria within scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Civil engineering, site, utility and infrastructure design proficiency in commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on mission critical data center campus design.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Civil Engineering.
  • Doctorate in Civil Engineering or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience OR Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience contributing to civil engineering design efforts for large-scale critical facilities or infrastructure development projects in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience leading or coordinating engineering workstreams and supporting civil engineering processes for large-scale campus or infrastructure environments.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, SketchUp, Bluebeam, BIM 360, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or similar design and collaboration tools.
  • Experience supporting site selection, due diligence, permitting, land acquisition, master planning, or site development activities with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Experience in civil engineering design, infrastructure development, or related technical disciplines.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical or large-scale infrastructure environments.
  • Experience developing business cases and evaluating technical design approaches and engineering solutions.
  • English proficiency; Spanish, Portuguese, or French language skills are a plus.

Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
