Job description
This position is part of the Structures/Hydraulics Section at the Vermont Agency of Transportation. The Section develops plans, specifications, and estimates for transportation infrastructure across Vermont, including bridges, culverts, and related structures. This role focuses on hydrology and hydraulics, supporting the design and analysis of bridges and culverts statewide.
Engineers in this role assist with hydraulic modeling, hydrologic calculations, and evaluating stream behavior and storm event flows. Work includes preparing technical documentation, conducting field assessments, and coordinating with structural, roadway, and environmental staff. Depending on experience, engineers may perform tasks under guidance, independently, or with limited supervision.
This position uses hydraulic and hydrologic tools such as SRH-2D, HEC-RAS, HY-8, WMS, and StreamStats, along with GIS software for mapping and data evaluation. Strong communication skills, an interest in water resources, and the ability to manage multiple assignments are important.
Common Responsibilities:
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for bridges and culverts
- Assist with hydraulic modeling and interpretation of results
- Prepare reports, drawings, and design documentation
- Conduct site visits and collect field data as needed
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams

Environmental Factors
Duties are generally performed in both office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards and, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND two (2) year of engineering experience.
OR
Associates degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND four (4) years of engineering experience INCLUDING licensure as an Engineer Intern.
