What does a Civil Engineer Relocation Intern do?

A Civil Engineer Relocation Intern assists with projects that involve moving or relocating infrastructure, utilities, or buildings to accommodate new construction or public works. Their responsibilities often include supporting the design and planning process, preparing technical documents, conducting site visits, and collaborating with senior engineers. The internship provides hands-on experience in relocation logistics, project management, and civil engineering principles, making it a valuable opportunity for students or recent graduates interested in the field.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Civil Engineer Relocation Intern expect to be involved with during their internship?

As a Civil Engineer Relocation Intern, you'll typically assist with tasks related to infrastructure relocation, such as supporting the planning and coordination of moving utilities or roadways to accommodate construction projects. You may work alongside experienced engineers to conduct site assessments, draft plans, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Interns often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including surveyors, project managers, and contractors, gaining hands-on exposure to project documentation, field visits, and client meetings. This role offers a valuable opportunity to understand the complexities of relocation projects and develop practical engineering skills in a real-world environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Engineer Relocation Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineer Relocation Intern, you need a foundational understanding of civil engineering principles, coursework toward a relevant degree, and strong analytical skills. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, GIS systems, and Microsoft Office, along with any internship-specific safety certifications, is often expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help interns collaborate effectively with diverse teams and manage changing project requirements. These skills and qualities are crucial for supporting complex relocation projects, ensuring technical accuracy, and integrating smoothly into professional engineering environments.

What is the difference between Civil Engineer Relocation Intern vs Civil Engineer Intern?

Job description

Description

Your role at GEI.

We are seeking a motivated Civil Technician/Technologist to join our Owen Sound office, with a primary focus on AutoCAD Civil 3D drafting, land development design, water resources, and linear infrastructure municipal engineering. The successful candidate will play a key technical role supporting site development, municipal servicing, grading design, stormwater management, natural hazard assessment, and related office-based technical work.

This position will support a wide range of civil and land development projects, including site plans, subdivision design, lot grading, stormwater management and natural hazard assessments, and municipal infrastructure. The role emphasizes technical drafting, survey data processing, and base plan development, with a strong focus on producing high-quality design drawings and digital models using AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties
  • Prepare detailed Civil 3D drawings, including site plans, site grading plans, servicing plans, road alignments, profiles, and cross-sections for land development and linear infrastructure municipal and transportation engineering projects.
  • Build and maintain surfaces, TIN models, corridors, pipe networks, and integrated base plans to support engineering design.
  • Analyze and adapt surfaces, TIN models, corridors, pipe networks, and integrated base plans to support cut/fill analysis calculations and quantity take-offs.
  • Process survey, LiDAR, and UAV datasets to generate accurate contours, surfaces, and base mapping suitable for design.
  • Develop base plans from survey inputs, legal plans, GIS data, and other approved sources to support site and municipal design workflows.
  • Assist with creating figures and supporting materials for stormwater management, water resources assessments, and environmental submissions.
  • Support project documentation by preparing drawings, exhibits, and data packages for clients, agencies, and internal teams.
  • Ensure all drawings, models, and project data are organized and comply with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary staff to support design development and project delivery.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a Civil Engineering Technology, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Geomatics, or related diploma or degree.
  • Minimum 3-years post-graduate work experience in civil drafting, land development, water resources, municipal design, or mapping using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D, including surface modeling, grading, alignments, pipe networks, and base plan creation.
  • Experience in processing survey data (GPS, total station, LiDAR, UAV) and integrating datasets into Civil 3D.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Working knowledge of GIS platforms (ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial data integration.
  • Strong organizational and data-management skills, with the ability to support multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Interest in supporting multidisciplinary projects, including land development, municipal servicing, and environmental design.
  • Physical and environmental requirements for this position are available upon request.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Eligibility for or certification with OACETT (C.E.T., or C.Tech.) is considered an asset.
  • Topographic field survey experience would be considered an asset, but is not mandatory.
  • Familiarity with DWG, DAT, and survey data structures, including LiDAR workflows.
  • We are seeking candidates who are located within a 45-minute commute of the Owen Sound office or who are open to relocating to Owen Sound or the surrounding area.
  • This role requires working within an office setting, during regular business hours and being comfortable in a dynamic, fast-paced office environment. On occasion, overtime work or work outside of normal operating hours may be a requirement.
