What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Engineer PE, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineer PE, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, mathematical analysis, and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with design software like AutoCAD and Civil 3D, as well as familiarity with project management tools and industry standards, is essential. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills enable effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications ensure the safe, efficient, and successful completion of complex infrastructure projects.

What are some common challenges civil engineers with a PE license face when managing large-scale infrastructure projects?

Civil engineers with a Professional Engineer (PE) license often oversee complex projects that require balancing technical demands, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder interests. Common challenges include coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing project timelines and budgets, and navigating permitting processes with local authorities. Effective communication is essential, as PE civil engineers must ensure all parties—contractors, architects, and government agencies—are aligned throughout the project lifecycle. Developing strong project management skills and adaptability can help overcome these challenges and contribute to successful project outcomes.

What is a Civil Engineer PE?

A Civil Engineer PE is a civil engineer who has earned the Professional Engineer (PE) license. This credential demonstrates that the engineer has met the education, experience, and exam requirements established by their state licensing board. Civil Engineer PEs are authorized to sign and seal engineering plans, offer engineering services to the public, and take legal responsibility for their work. Achieving PE status is a significant career milestone and is often required for senior engineering positions and for working on public sector projects.

What is the difference between Civil Engineer Pe vs Civil Engineer?

Founded in 1973, ISG multi-disciplinary, full-service architecture, engineering, planning, and interior design firm serving clients nationwide. As an employee-owned firm, we are driven by collaboration, accountability, and a shared commitment to creating environments where people thrive.
ISG is seeking a Civil Engineer to join our growing team. In this role, you will be an ISG Employee Owner, working alongside a passionate group of professionals to deliver thoughtful, innovative, and community-impacting solutions. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to projects from concept through construction while building lasting relationships with teammates and clients.
You will work closely with Jerremy Foss, PE, CNUA, Civil Engineering Group Leader, and collaborate with a highly integrated, in-house team that includes architects, planners, engineers, visualization specialists, specification writers, and construction administrators. This team-based approach allows you to focus on great design, technical excellence, and professional growth—without silos.
What You’ll Experience at ISG:
  • A collaborative, employee-owned culture where your voice and contributions matter
  • Exposure to diverse, high-profile projects across multiple project types
  • Opportunities to grow technically and professionally
  • A firm that values innovation, responsiveness, and long-term relationships

Essential Duties
  • Partner with project teams to develop and implement civil engineering strategies that support innovative, sustainable, and high-performing project outcomes
  • Act as a key point of contact, building strong relationships with clients, contractors, and local, state, and regulatory agencies to ensure smooth project coordination and compliance
  • Support projects through contract and construction administration, contributing to quality, constructability, and successful delivery from design through completion
  • Prepare and contribute to infrastructure master plans, feasibility studies, and technical reports, including stormwater management analyses as applicable to project needs
  • Produce high-quality engineering drawings, details, specifications, and schedules using tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and ArcGIS to bring concepts to life
  • Provide technical expertise and on-site support during construction, helping resolve field challenges and ensuring design intent is achieved
  • Embrace ISG’s culture and values by working collaboratively, sharing knowledge, and supporting firm-wide goals and objectives
  • Serve as a mentor and leader to local ISG team members, modeling professionalism, technical excellence, and a commitment to employee ownership
We’ve listed a compensation range that reflects our expectations for this role, including both direct and indirect components.  We understand that your experience and value may fall outside of this range. If you feel you're a strong fit but your compensation needs differ, we’re open to a conversation—let’s talk.

Essential Duties
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or ability to obtain within 1 year
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • 5-10 years of experience in Civil Engineering
  • Strong communication, project management, report writing, organization, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of industry design standards
  • Self-directed and can work independently with minimal supervision
  • Familiarity with local government process and permitting
