What are circadian jobs?

Circadian jobs refer to roles or work schedules that are influenced by the body's natural circadian rhythms, which are 24-hour cycles affecting sleep, alertness, and other biological processes. These jobs often involve shift work, such as night shifts or rotating shifts, where employees must be mindful of how work hours can impact their health and performance. Understanding circadian rhythms is important in these jobs to minimize fatigue, improve productivity, and maintain well-being.

What is the difference between Circadian vs Sleep Technician?

AspectCircadianSleep Technician
Required CredentialsOften requires knowledge of sleep science, basic certifications in sleep healthTypically requires certification such as RPSGT or equivalent, and training in sleep studies
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, healthcare facilities, or sleep clinics focusing on circadian rhythmsSleep centers conducting sleep studies and assisting patients during overnight tests
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in research, healthcare, and chronobiology fieldsPrimarily in sleep medicine clinics and hospitals

While both roles relate to sleep, a Circadian specialist focuses on the biological clock and sleep-wake cycles, often in research or health sciences. A Sleep Technician assists with sleep studies, monitoring patients during sleep tests. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a circadian rhythm specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Circadian Rhythm Specialist, you need a strong background in biology, sleep science, or chronobiology, often supported by advanced degrees in health sciences or related fields. Familiarity with actigraphy, polysomnography, and specialized circadian analysis software is typically required. Outstanding analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with patients and research teams. These competencies are crucial for accurately assessing circadian patterns and developing tailored interventions to improve health outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by circadian rhythm researchers and how do they typically address them?

Circadian rhythm researchers often face challenges such as designing experiments that account for natural biological variability and ensuring accurate timing of sample collection, since even small deviations can impact results. They also need to coordinate closely with colleagues in fields like sleep medicine, genetics, and data science to interpret complex data sets. To address these issues, teams usually implement rigorous protocols, use automated sampling equipment, and hold regular interdisciplinary meetings to discuss findings and troubleshooting strategies.

Job description

Unlocking human performance, safety and health through circadian timing and control.

Time isn’t just hours, minutes, and seconds. There’s a different kind of time — not invented by us or powered by batteries. It’s each person’s internal circadian time, which quietly governs nearly every biological system in our bodies — from sleep and alertness to metabolism and immune function — and can vary significantly between people.

The undisputed leader in circadian technology.

At Timeshifter, we translate complex circadian science into practical, high-impact products that address challenges affecting billions, each using the same core technology. Our first product — a jet lag app — is now the most downloaded in the world. Our second is designed to help shift workers improve sleep, health, and quality of life, while enhancing safety and boosting productivity. Timeshifter is also trusted where circadian control is mission‑critical, from space missions to elite sports. As we enter the next frontier of personalized medicine, we’re exploring how Timeshifter can serve as the clock for delivering healthcare aligned with each person’s biology.

Role Overview

As a Senior Backend & Algorithm Engineer, you will lead backend development and algorithm design at the forefront of circadian science and technology. Working closely with two of Timeshifter’s co‑founders — world‑renowned circadian expert Dr. Steven W. Lockley and CXO Jacob Ravn — you will enhance Timeshifter’s cutting‑edge technology platform and circadian algorithms, expand AI/ML capabilities, and manage technical integrations.

Responsibilities
  • Advance Timeshifter’s circadian technology platform, develop and refine algorithms, drive AI integration, improve APIs, and manage technical partner integrations.
Qualifications
  • Strong experience in backend development, algorithms, and AI.
  • Experienced in good software design and practices.
  • Familiarity with ReactJS, SQL, Linux and embedded systems, as well as AWS and Kubernetes.
Compensation

We offer a highly competitive compensation package that includes a market‑leading salary, stock options, and a comprehensive benefits program. You will receive premium medical, dental, and vision coverage, along with additional perks designed to support your long‑term health, well‑being, and financial security.

Timeshifter is the leader in circadian technology, translating circadian science into products and solutions that improve human health, safety and performance.
