Your Role on the Team
Under general supervision, guided by the Committee on Interdisciplinary Practice (CIDP), and in collaboration with the Department of Neurology faculty, the Position provides direct care through physical assessment and medical intervention to patients in the NCC. Will perform specific neurological examinations and general physical examinations based on advanced academic and clinical training in the field of neurology. A Senior physician assistant is an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience.
The PA manages the provision of care related to IRB biomedical protocols in the NCC. Will work collaboratively with the research staff in the development and conduct of research as well as the dissemination of research findings through written publication, professional meetings, and community programs. Will function pursuant to a practice agreement (PA) through the Department of Neurology. The PA will be responsible and be accountable for maintaining the policies and protocols by the CIDP and Medical Director of the Medical Staffing Department.
Will participate in teaching activities, under the guidance of the faculty of Neurology, with fellows, residents, students, and members of the community. Will provide supervision, under the guidance of the faculty of Neurology, of the medical practices of fellows, residents, and students.
What It Takes to be Successful
Required:
  • Neurocritical care is a subspecialty of neurology that treats acute neurological emergencies and requires advanced knowledge of both neurology and critical care; thus applicant must have advanced expertise in the standard practices of neurocritical care.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with doctors, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement Officers.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with doctors, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement Officers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the health system.
  • Advanced knowledge of what comprises the medical history and skill in the history-taking Process, including time allowance to carry these out. Advanced knowledge of when specific diagnostic tests are indicated according to written protocol.
  • Skill in performing diagnostic tests according to protocol.
  • Advanced skill to read medical instruments, editing data for errors and making necessary corrections of treatment modalities.
  • Advanced skill to operate specialized medical equipment and be trained in new medical equipment and procedures, e.g., intracranial pressure monitoring devices, central venous pressure monitors, neuroelectrophysiological machines, Pulmonary respirators, cardioverter or cardiac defibrillator (capacitor discharge unit), Transducer systems, digital read-out equipment and medical computer systems.
  • Ability to perform invasive medical procedures including central venous catheter placement, arterial line placement, lumbar punctures. Advanced knowledge in understanding indications and complications and monitoring for them.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
  • Applicants are expected to meet the legal requirements to practice as a PA in the State of California.
  • Ability to provide teaching/education activities to broad range of people including fellows, residents, medical students, and community members
  • Licensure through the California Physician Assistant Board as a physician assistant.
  • Must have a National Provider Identifier (NPI), or obtain an NPI, prior to employment start date and meet current Medicare requirements for billing.
  • Applicant must hold a current DEA Registration with schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4 and 5 and State issued prescribing authority
  • National board certification by the NCCPA at the time of initial appointment.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification from an AHA approved course.
  • Initial Applicant must provide documentation of provision of care (# and type of cases/procedures performed) during the past 24 months, representative of the scope and complexity of the privileges requested.
  • 1-3 years of experience in neurocritical care or related field.
Preferred:
  • Experience in the ICU, preferably with Neurology and Neurosurgical patients.
Special Conditions:
  • Shifts will vary due to per diem status, Primary location will be Irvine Hospital, Secondary location will be Orange - Douglas Hospital.
