Position Summary
Claflin University, a member of the NCAA Division II and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), invites applications for the position of Assistant Men's Basketball Coach. Reporting directly to the Head Men's Basketball Coach, this position plays an integral role in all aspects of the men's basketball program. The successful candidate will assist in building and sustaining a competitive, academically focused program that upholds Claflin University's commitment to student-athlete excellence, institutional integrity, and the core values of the CIAA.
About Claflin University
Founded in 1869, Claflin University is the oldest HBCU in South Carolina and a leading liberal arts institution dedicated to academic excellence, social justice, and community engagement. Located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Claflin is a United Methodist Church-affiliated institution that prides itself on developing the whole student intellectually, spiritually, and athletically. The Claflin University Panthers compete at the NCAA Division II level and are members of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the Head Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting all practices, conditioning programs, and game-day preparations.
  • Actively participate in the recruitment and evaluation of prospective student-athletes in compliance with NCAA Division II, CIAA, and Claflin University rules and regulations.
  • Provide direct instruction and individual skill development for assigned player positions, with emphasis on player improvement and development.
  • Support student-athlete academic success by monitoring eligibility, class attendance, and progress toward graduation in collaboration with academic support staff.
  • Assist in developing and implementing scouting reports, game film breakdown, and opponent analysis.
  • Participate in community outreach, basketball camps, clinics, and alumni engagement activities that promote the program and university.
  • Assist with the day-to-day administrative functions of the program including scheduling, travel coordination, equipment management, and budget tracking.
  • Foster a team culture grounded in discipline, respect, accountability, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and strict adherence to all NCAA, CIAA, and institutional rules and compliance standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and Director of Athletics.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of collegiate or high school basketball coaching experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Proven ability to recruit and evaluate talented student-athletes.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for recruiting and competition.
  • Commitment to the academic and athletic mission of Claflin University.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Athletic Administration, Sports Management, Education, or a related field.
  • Experience coaching at the NCAA Division II level or above.
  • Prior playing experience at the collegiate or professional level.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful recruiting within the CIAA footprint or comparable region.
  • Experience working with student-athletes from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in video editing and basketball analytics software (e.g., Synergy, Hudl).

  • Requires evening, weekend, and holiday commitments.

  • Physical demands include standing for extended periods, lifting equipment.
