Position Summary
Provide leadership for the music ministries of Portage Chapel Hill Church by planning, coordinating, and leading music in worship, and encouraging congregational participation. Chapel Hill Church is a theologically progressive United Methodist Church.

Part-time non-exempt position. Half-time (approximately 20-25hrs/week)
Salary $30,000/year

Key Responsibilities

This role is directly the point person for all music in worship this means that they will plan and coordinate music for all worship services in collaboration with pastors and the worship team which looks like:  

  • Serving as Worship Leader for the 11am Contemporary Worship service, including recruiting band members, running weekly rehearsal.   
  • Overseeing and consulting with the directors of: Chancel Choir, Bell Choir, Youth Band, Intergenerational music choirs.
  • Serve as the Point Person for Planning Center Online worship services.
  • Create and modify existing music programs to suit the needs of the church and mission/vision of Chapel Hill. 
  • Coordinate media and music resources with the Director of Technology and provide needed materials to Communications.
  • Recruit, support, and develop vocalists and instrumentalists within the congregation for all services.
  • Plan and lead music for special services (e.g., holidays, weddings, funerals).
  • Select and purchase music within budget; arrange or adapt music as needed.
  • Organize and maintain music library and oversee care of instruments.
  • Participate in worship planning meetings, staff meetings, and the Worship Committee.
  • Collaborate with church staff on special projects and programming.
  • Pursue continuing education opportunities as approved.

Supervision
Oversee directors of musical ensembles, paid musicians, including accompanists, choral scholars, and additional musicians as needed.

Qualifications

  • Degree in music or equivalent experience.
  • Strong musical leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage and lead congregational worship.
  • Proficiency in piano or guitar, in addition to voice.
  • Collaborative, organized, and adaptable.
  • Commitment to spiritual growth and the church’s mission.

Terms of Employment

  • Reports to the supervising Pastor.
  • Part-time (approximately 20+ hours/week), with regular on-site presence.
  • Works closely with pastors, staff, and volunteer musicians.
  • Compensation reviewed annually.
