Job description

Position Summary
The Assistant Wrestling Coach supports the Head Wrestling Coach in developing a championship-caliber wrestling program that pursues excellence academically, athletically, and spiritually. Assistant coaches are expected to invest in the holistic development of student-athletes by providing technical instruction, mentorship, discipleship, and support during practices, competitions, recruiting, and team activities.
Essential Responsibilities
Wrestling Instruction & Athlete Development
  • Provide high-quality technical instruction in all areas of wrestling.
  • Assist in planning and implementing effective daily practices.
  • Drill with and wrestle student-athletes to improve technique, confidence, and performance.
  • Demonstrate wrestling techniques safely and effectively.
  • Analyze match and practice film, identify areas for improvement, and communicate adjustments to athletes.
  • Assist with individual athlete development plans throughout the season.
  • Encourage a culture of discipline, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Spiritual Leadership
  • Demonstrate a growing, authentic Christian faith consistent with the mission of Cornerstone University.
  • Model Christ-like character, integrity, humility, and servant leadership.
  • Encourage and support the spiritual development of student-athletes.
  • Participate in team devotions, prayer, and faith-based discussions as appropriate.
  • Build meaningful mentoring relationships with student-athletes.

Team Operations
  • Attend scheduled practices, competitions, meetings, and team functions.
  • Travel with the team as assigned.
  • Assist in transporting student-athletes to and from competitions (University van certification required).
  • Assist with equipment setup, breakdown, and organization.
  • Help maintain a safe and positive practice environment.
  • Support compliance with NAIA, conference, and university policies.

Recruiting
  • Assist in identifying and evaluating prospective student-athletes.
  • Build relationships with high school coaches, club coaches, athletes, and families.
  • Represent Cornerstone University and the wrestling program professionally during recruiting activities.
  • Assist with campus visits and recruiting events.

Administrative Support
  • Maintain timely communication with the Head Coach.
  • Complete assigned administrative tasks in a professional and timely manner.
  • Assist with camps, clinics, fundraising events, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Support other duties as assigned by the Head Coach.

Qualifications
Required
  • Collegiate wrestling experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of folkstyle wrestling.
  • Ability to effectively teach wrestling techniques to student-athletes of varying experience levels.
  • Commitment to the Christian mission and values of Cornerstone University.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel as required.
  • Ability to obtain University van certification.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to actively participate in wrestling practices, including drilling and live wrestling when appropriate.

Preferred
  • Previous collegiate coaching experience.
  • Recruiting experience.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience using video analysis software (e.g., Hudl, Trackwrestling, or similar platforms).
  • Experience mentoring student-athletes in leadership, academics, and personal development.

  • A personal relationship with Jesus Christ and an active Christian commitment.
