Their expertise helps organizations minimize environmental impact and meet regulatory requirements.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a CHMM?

To thrive as a CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), you need expertise in hazardous materials management, regulatory compliance, environmental science, and a relevant bachelor's degree, often in chemistry, environmental science, or a related field, plus the CHMM certification. Job Type:

Full-time

Description

Every lunar lander, defense system, and commercial spacecraft that maneuvers in space needs propulsion it can trust. That's what we build at Agile Space Industries and it's growing fast. Headquarters in Durango, Colorado, with operations expanding into Tulsa, Oklahoma, and soon Seattle, Washington, Agile has posted more than 40% year-over-year growth for three years running, with no signs of slowing down.

We're looking for bold, hands-on leaders who want to help write the next chapter of space history. This isn't a role where you'll manage from a distance, you'll be in the thick of hardware that's headed to the moon, to orbit, and into some of the most demanding missions flying today. As an integral contributor during our growth stage, you'll be eligible to participate in our stock option plan, sharing directly in the value you help create. All stock grants are subject to executive review and approval under the Company's equity plan.

The Opportunity

This is a rare chance to build an EHS&S function largely from the ground up. You'll own environmental, health, safety, and physical security programs across engineering, manufacturing, laboratory, and test operations working with hazardous materials, industrial processes, and controlled technical information in a facility that must meet CMMC Level 2 and NIST SP 800-171 requirements. You'll report directly to the COO and have real influence over how the company grows safely.

What You'll DoEHS Program Development & Compliance
  • Develop and maintain company-wide environmental, health, and safety management systems.
  • Keep the company compliant with OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, and state/local regulations.
  • Build policies, training, audits, and corrective-action systems that hold up under scrutiny and that people use.
Hazardous Operations & Risk Management
  • Lead risk management for hazardous materials, manufacturing, industrial equipment, and test activities.
  • Run hazard analyses, operational readiness reviews, and incident investigations.
  • Build safety controls directly into facility, process, and equipment design, not bolted on after the fact.
Own Environmental Compliance
  • Manage permitting, reporting, waste handling, and regulator relationships.
  • Maintain compliance programs for chemical handling, emissions, wastewater, and hazardous waste.
  • Be the company's primary point of contact during inspections and audits.
Lead Physical Security Alignment
  • Partner with Operations, Facilities, and IT to build physical security processes aligned with CMMC Level 2 and NIST SP 800-171.
  • Support secure facility operations, access control, and protection of controlled environments.
  • Prepare documentation and readiness materials for compliance audits.
Prepare the Company for the Unexpected
  • Build emergency response, crisis management, and business continuity plans.
  • Run drills and coordinate response planning with internal teams and outside agencies.
  • Support readiness for new facilities, equipment, and manufacturing or test capabilities.
Shape a Safety-First Culture
  • Champion a proactive safety culture built on accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Act as the EHS&S resource for engineering, manufacturing, facilities, and test teams.
  • Build training and communications that make safety expectations clear and easy to follow.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, Industrial Safety, Occupational Health, or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years of EHS experience in aerospace, defense, advanced manufacturing, chemical processing, or another highly regulated industrial setting.
  • Hands-on experience managing hazardous materials and regulated operational processes.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, DOT, and environmental permitting.
  • Familiarity with physical security requirements under CMMC Level 2 and NIST SP 800-171.
  • Strong leadership and cross-functional communication skills: you'll work with everyone from machine operators to executives.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CSP, CIH, CHMM, ASP, or similar professional certification.
  • Experience with aerospace propulsion, hazardous testing operations, or advanced manufacturing.
  • Background in operational risk assessment or process hazard analysis.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
  • Experience in government contracting or defense-industry compliance.
Key Competencies
  • Regulatory compliance leadership
  • Risk management and operational discipline
  • Process development and continuous improvement
  • Cross-functional collaboration
  • Incident response and problem solving
  • Audit readiness and documentation control
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to scale systems in a high-growth manufacturing environment
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to regularly move throughout office, manufacturing, laboratory, warehouse, and test environments to conduct inspections, audits, training, and incident investigations.
  • Ability to occasionally use stairs or ladders, access equipment and work areas, and lift or carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and work around industrial equipment, hazardous materials, elevated noise, and varying indoor or outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to travel between company locations and perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
