GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Plant & Equipment Mechanic I

 

Under immediate supervision this position performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of water treatment plants, raw water intake pump stations, potable water pump stations, elevated and ground storage tanks, lakes, dams, the chlorine dioxide disinfection facility, and a scalping station. Responsibilities include troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment to ensure safe, efficient water production operations.

Plant & Equipment Mechanic II

This position exercises no supervision.

Plant & Equipment Mechanic II/III

 This position exercises supervision over lower-level staff and may function as a lead.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical equipment and related components.

Perform general maintenance at water facilities, including carpentry, electrical wiring, plumbing, painting, and related tasks.

Lubricate, change oil, and perform preventive maintenance on motors and equipment.

Operate a city vehicle daily to travel to water treatment plants, pump stations, storage tanks, lakes, and vendors.

Maintain safe and productive work sites at all times.

Perform basic computer operations.

Mow and maintain grounds.

Use hand tools, specialized tools, welding equipment, and electrical test instruments.

Operate a personal or City vehicle.

Plant & Equipment Mechanic II

Maintain clarifiers, chlorinators, chlorine dioxide generators, and related equipment.

Repair, rebuild, or replace pumps, motors, valves, solenoids, and chemical feed systems.

Perform minor electrical troubleshooting and repairs.

Add/remove columns on vertical turbine pumps for optimal water quality.

Plant & Equipment Mechanic III

Disassemble/reassemble pumps; replace bearings, seals, impellers.

Maintain Risk Management records for chlorine systems in accordance with TCEQ regulations.

Train, coach, and mentor assigned staff.

Provide advanced troubleshooting.

Perform moderate metal fabrication, plumbing, and mechanical construction.

Perform moderate electrical troubleshooting.

Ability to:

Organize and prioritize work.

Evaluate motor and pump performance.

Plant & Equipment Mechanic III

Knowledge of:

The raw water and treated water distribution system in relation to treatment plants, pump stations, elevated storage tanks, and water lines.

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).

Skill to:

Work on electrical systems without supervision.

Lead a crew to raise and lower vertical turbine pumps at Lake Ivie.

Ability to:

Read blueprints, electrical ladder drawings, schematics, and diagrams.

Lead, manage, and perform as a team member in a manner that accomplishes the Division’s mission and treats team members with dignity, courtesy, and respect.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.  Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Plant and Equipment Mechanic I

Experience:

One (1) year of general maintenance experience is preferred.

Education/Training:

A high school diploma or GED is required.

License or Certificate:

A valid current Texas driver’s license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

Possession of a Class D Water License from the State of Texas within six (6) months of employment is required.

Possession of a Class C Water License from the State of Texas within two (2) years of employment is required.

Plant and Equipment Mechanic II

Experience:

Two (2) years of relevant experience in maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment, such as pumps and motors, at a level equivalent to Plant & Equipment Mechanic I, is required.

Education/Training:

Previous mechanical training is required.

Plant and Equipment Mechanic III

Experience:

Five (5) years of relevant experience in maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment, such as pumps and motors, including duties performed at the Plant & Equipment Mechanic II level, is required.

Education/Training:

Advanced mechanical skills obtained through formal education, vocational programs, or substantial hands-on experience are required.

License or Certificate:

A Class B Water License from the State of Texas within five (5) years of employment is required.

Special Requirements

Rotating on-call schedule.

Exposure to extreme weather, chemicals, confined spaces, and electrical hazards.

Ability to climb elevated tanks and work at heights.

Ability to respond to emergencies within 30 minutes when on call.
