Caritas is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with strong leadership experience to partner with a committed and mission-driven team. This role includes both internal and external leadership responsibilities, overseeing a high-performing finance and accounting team while contributing to organization-wide strategy and decision-making.
The CFO reports to the President and CEO and serves on the Senior Leadership Team, working collaboratively with executive leadership and supporting the Board of Directors. This position offers the opportunity to play a key role in the organization’s continued growth as Caritas expands its programs, staff, and overall budget.

Salary: $150,000 – $180,000
Position Summary
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will report to the CEO, assessing organizational performance against the annual budget and long-term growth plans. They will set financial policy, guide strategy, and oversee financial administration, business planning, and budgeting, including collaborations where Caritas acts as the fiscal agent.
The CFO serves as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and provides strategic financial leadership to support organizational sustainability, growth, and long-term financial health and mission impact.
As part of the Executive Team, the CFO will work closely with other executives, coordinate the Finance and Monitoring Committee of the Board, and manage direct reports. The CFO will serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and Executive Team, providing financial forecasting, risk analysis, and long-term financial planning to support organizational decision-making. The role requires adaptability to a dynamic environment and strong autonomous, deadline-driven leadership.
Essential Duties amp; Responsibilities:
Strategy
  • Serve as a resource to board leadership and staff executive leadership; providing strategic recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
  • Participate in the ongoing strategic planning process as an integral member of the Executive Team.
  • Provide financial modeling, forecasting, and scenario planning to support strategic decision-making in a grant-funded environment.
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the strategic plan.
  • Engage with development to align financial management with short- and long-term financial planning and projections.
  • Engage the board finance and monitoring committee in planning for the ongoing and future financial stability of the organization.
Financial Management and Compliance
  • Ensure that finance staff maintain financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, regulatory requirements and Office of Management and Budget audit requirements and monitor the use of all funds.
  • Oversee budgeting and the implementation of budgets. Monitor progress and regularly report key metrics to staff, board, and collaborative leaders.
  • Ensure that Caritas financial systems and controls are adequate to protect the assets and reputation of the agency.
  • Implement and provide continued oversight for financial compliance with all funders. Regularly review and update process and practice to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Oversee the preparation and approval of financial reporting materials and metrics for funding organizations and the Board of Directors; review, interpret, and present monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements.
  • Develop, recommend, and maintain financial policies in conjunction with the Board Finance and Monitoring Committee. Develop and maintain procedures necessary to implement policies.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting; direct all financial, project-based, and departmental accounting.
  • Coordinate all audit and tax preparation activities.
  • Collaboratively with the Chief Operations Officer, evaluate and oversee all benefits negotiations to provide the most competitive packages for employees.
  • Review all formal finance procedures, processes, and administration, recommending improvements to the systems in place and managing the systems going forward.
  • Manage banking relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash positions.
  • Ensure that the agency’s investment policy is followed while obtaining the highest possible return on investments.
  • Assist the Chief Operating Officer in properly insuring the organization’s assets (i.e., general liability, D amp;O, etc.) to meet regulatory requirements while also safeguarding the organization’s people and property.
Team Management
  • Provide direct oversight of the Deputy Director of Finance and Director of Grants and Contract Compliance, with indirect oversight of finance and accounting staff; provide financial leadership and guidance across departments as needed.
  • Engage other members of the Executive Team to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures all finance and accounting functions and effectively support Caritas of Austin’s immediate and evolving strategies.
  • Partner with program leadership to ensure strong financial stewardship across departments.
  • Provide support for attracting, developing, and retaining employees.
  • Lead change management initiatives related to financial systems, reporting, and budgeting processes.
Qualifications
Education:
  • Required – Bachelor Degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field required.
  • Preferred - CPA or CMA credential.
  • Preferred – Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Experience:
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in senior financial management role in a non-profit organization(s) strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing a budget of at least $5 million.
  • Demonstrated excellence in managing finance, accounting, budgeting, internal control, and reporting.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Experience with compliance and financial management of federal, state, and local government grants.
  • A hands on manager with integrity and desire to work in dynamic, mission-driven environment.
  • Experience with grants from City of Austin, HUD, and/or the VA is a plus.
Computer Skills:
  • Abila MIP Fund Accounting experience preferred or experience with other larger ERP systems (i.e., NetSuite, Financial Edge NXT, or Sage Intacct)
  • Advanced computer skills are required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office with advanced Excel capabilities.
