What Is a Chief Legal Officer?

A chief legal officer (CLO) is an executive-level position that oversees a company’s legal team. As a chief legal officer, you advise the organization on all legal matters, such as contracts, compliance, and regulatory issues. Your job duties include investigating issues of non-compliance, suggesting measures to avoid legal risks, and representing the company as the chief litigator in court. You are also involved in hiring, training, and directing department lawyers through corporate legal proceedings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Chief Legal Officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chief Legal Officer, you need deep expertise in corporate law, risk management, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and significant legal practice experience. Familiarity with contract management systems, compliance software, and legal research tools is often required. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills help build consensus and effectively advise executive teams. These capabilities are vital for minimizing legal risks, ensuring ethical operations, and supporting the organization’s strategic objectives.

How does a Chief Legal Officer typically collaborate with executive leadership and other departments within an organization?

A Chief Legal Officer (CLO) works closely with the executive team, including the CEO, CFO, and board members, to provide strategic legal guidance on company initiatives, risk management, and regulatory compliance. The CLO also partners with departments such as HR, finance, and operations to ensure legal considerations are integrated into business decisions and policies. This cross-functional collaboration is essential for proactively identifying potential legal issues and ensuring organizational objectives are met while mitigating risk.

What does a Chief Legal Officer do?

A Chief Legal Officer (CLO) is the highest-ranking legal executive in an organization, responsible for overseeing all legal aspects of the business. They provide strategic guidance on corporate governance, regulatory compliance, risk management, and legal policy. CLOs also manage the company’s legal team, represent the organization in high-level negotiations, and ensure that the company’s operations adhere to all applicable laws and regulations. Their role is critical in protecting the organization from legal risks and supporting its overall business objectives.

Board Member & Chief Legal Officer

Abba's House Communities

Phoenix, AZ • Remote

Full-time

This job post has expired today. Applications are no longer accepted.

Job description

Abba's House Communities is a conceptual nonprofit Christian ministry founded on the belief that every human being deserves a safe place to sleep, heal, and rebuild. Guided by the slogan "A Home For Everyone," our vision is to protect the rights of the poor and the helpless.

To combat the rising rates of homelessness, our goal is to convert underutilized warehouses into fully equipped Community Housing Centers. These planned facilities are designed to provide both immediate relief and long-term stability. Our vision for each center includes private pods with clean beds and televisions for personal space, alongside shared amenities such as a gym, cafeteria, full kitchens, laundry rooms, and dedicated office space for job searching.

The Opportunity

We are currently in the foundational concept stage. Right now, Abba's House Communities is driven by a single founder with a background in paralegal studies and theology, working tirelessly to bring this ministry to life.

To take this from a concept to a reality, we are seeking a dedicated professional to join our remote board of directors as our Pro Bono Chief Legal Officer. You will be stepping in on the ground floor to help build the organization's legal and operational framework. While this is currently a remote, volunteer role, our goal is to open a flagship facility that will serve as a blueprint for nationwide expansion. We are open to offering future compensation as the organization successfully scales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Foundational Legal Oversight: Serve as the primary legal advisor, guiding the organization through its startup phase and establishing sound corporate governance.
  • In-House Counsel & Dispute Resolution: Represent Abba's House Communities in any legal disputes and act as the organization's dedicated in-house counsel.
  • Board Participation: Actively participate in virtual board meetings to help shape the strategic direction and policies of our planned 90-Day Transition and Direct Entry programs.
  • Development Counsel: Advise on the future legalities of warehouse conversions, zoning requirements, and tenant agreements.
  • Partnership Structuring: Assist in drafting and reviewing initial agreements to facilitate future collaborations with community stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active state bar membership (Arizona preferred, but not required).
  • Experience in nonprofit formation/compliance, real estate law, litigation, or corporate governance.
  • A strong alignment with our Christian ministry values and an entrepreneurial spirit suited for a startup environment.
  • A passion for answering the call of Matthew 25:35-40, which instructs us to house the homeless, welcome the stranger, and restore dignity to the displaced.
  • Ability to commit to regular virtual communication and remote board meetings.

How to Apply

(Please submit your resume and a brief statement of interest detailing your legal experience, your comfort level working with an early-stage concept, and your alignment with our mission.)
