What does a chief financial officer do?

A Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a senior-level position within a business or organization. This role demands a lot of high-level financial responsibility; the main tasks include creating and overseeing the company’s budget, managing shareholder financial questions, and addressing the general financial accountability and risk of the business. You will spend most days supervising the accounting team, networking with stakeholders, and meeting with other executive colleagues. A Chief Financial Officer’s job has two key parts: managing the day-to-day monetary picture and advising leadership on the overall financial strategy. This may include creating and presenting financial reports to boards and colleagues. Chief Financial Officers may also play a role in hiring for the company, especially for other high-level financial positions within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chief financial officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chief Financial Officer, you need deep expertise in financial management, strategic planning, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a CPA, MBA, or equivalent financial qualifications. Mastery of financial reporting tools, ERP systems (such as SAP or Oracle), and advanced Excel skills are commonly required. Leadership, strong communication, and decision-making abilities are crucial soft skills for guiding teams and influencing executive strategy. These competencies ensure financial health, risk management, and the alignment of fiscal strategy with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges a chief financial officer faces when aligning financial strategy with overall business objectives?

A Chief Financial Officer (CFO) often encounters the challenge of balancing short-term financial performance with the company’s long-term strategic goals. This involves coordinating closely with other executive leaders to ensure that the financial strategy supports wider business initiatives, such as expansion or digital transformation, without overextending resources. CFOs must also adapt financial planning in response to shifting market conditions and regulatory requirements, all while fostering clear communication across departments to ensure buy-in and alignment. Navigating these complexities requires both strong financial acumen and collaborative leadership skills.

Chief Financial Officer (Green Bay)

SkyWater Search Partners

Green Bay, WI • On-site

Full-time

This job post has expired 1 day ago. Applications are no longer accepted.

Job description

SkyWater Search Partners has been retained by a privately held, Wisconsin-based manufacturing and distribution organization to identify its next Chief Financial Officer.

Over the last 50+ years, our client has grown its operations from a single manufacturing & service business into a diversified portfolio of manufacturing, distribution and fabrication companies serving commercial, industrial, and residential markets throughout North America. Today, the organization generates over $500M in revenue annually through the disciplined operation of a large number of business entities across the United States and Canada, combining the entrepreneurial culture of a family-owned business with the scale and complexity of a multi-entity enterprise.

The Chief Financial Officer opportunity has become available due to the planned retirement of a long-tenured executive after several decades of service with the organization. Reporting directly to the President and serving as a key member of the executive leadership team, the CFO will oversee all aspects of the company's finance and accounting function while acting as a trusted strategic advisor to executive leadership and ownership.

Our client is seeking a forward-thinking finance executive who can build upon an already strong financial foundation, and play a critical role in leading the company through its next phase of growth. The ideal candidate will bring a balanced background in financial leadership, manufacturing operations, business partnership, and strategic decision-making, with experience supporting acquisitions, driving operational improvements, and influencing business performance across a diversified portfolio of operating companies.

This position offers a highly competitive executive compensation package, including a market-based base salary, annual performance-based incentive opportunity, comprehensive benefits, and if needed, relocation assistance.

We are currently considering candidates who are based in (or willing to relocate to) Northeast Wisconsin (Appleton, Manitowoc, Green Bay, De Pere, Oshkosh). This is an on-site executive leadership position, and the successful candidate will be expected to maintain a regular presence at the company's corporate headquarters while traveling periodically to operating locations throughout North America.
