What does a Chemical Process Engineer do?

A Chemical Process Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing processes used in the production of chemicals, fuels, pharmaceuticals, food, and other products. They work to improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability in manufacturing plants by analyzing chemical reactions, equipment, and workflows. Chemical Process Engineers often collaborate with other engineers and technicians to troubleshoot problems and implement new technologies in production systems.

What is the difference between Chemical Process Engineer vs Chemical Production Technician?

AspectChemical Process EngineerChemical Production Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in chemical engineering or related fieldAssociate's degree or technical certification in chemical technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, optimize, and oversee chemical processes in labs or plantsOperate and maintain equipment on the production floor
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, petrochemical, pharmaceuticals, and energy sectorsChemical manufacturing plants and processing facilities

The Chemical Process Engineer focuses on designing and improving chemical processes, requiring a degree in engineering. In contrast, the Chemical Production Technician handles daily operations and equipment maintenance, often with technical certifications. Both roles are vital in chemical industries but differ in responsibilities, education, and work scope.

What Is a Chemical Process Engineer?

A chemical process engineer’s responsibilities cover designing and developing processes for transforming raw materials into marketable products. You can hold a chemical process engineer job in an industry that processes natural gases, paper, pharmaceuticals, plastic, food, and other products. You will analyze procedures, communicate effectively with team members, apply math, science, and engineering concepts, and conduct experiments and report the results. Many types of chemical engineering careers exist in chemical production and manufacturing, mineral processing, oil exploration, sustainable engineering, and alternative energy fields. However, you can find chemical engineers with diverse duties in jobs in nearly every industry that creates a product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Chemical Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chemical Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical engineering principles, process design, and safety regulations, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS), knowledge of P&ID development, and relevant certifications like Six Sigma are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help you excel in this role. These skills ensure that processes are efficient, safe, and cost-effective, supporting both operational excellence and regulatory compliance.

What are some typical challenges a Chemical Process Engineer faces when optimizing plant operations?

Chemical Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing production efficiency with safety and environmental regulations, troubleshooting unexpected equipment malfunctions, and integrating new technologies into existing systems. They must collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including operators, maintenance staff, and quality control, to implement process improvements. Staying adaptable and proactive in problem-solving is key to overcoming these challenges while maintaining smooth and cost-effective operations.

Job description

Description
About the Role
GEOTEK makes engineered fiberglass composite structures for utility infrastructure - crossarms, light poles, and related products - using pultrusion and filament winding. We've been doing it for over 30 years and we're growing.
We're hiring a Composite Process Engineer to own process development and improvement on our composite manufacturing floor, with a primary focus on filament winding. This is a hands-on engineering role. You'll be on the floor, running trials, troubleshooting production issues, designing tooling in SolidWorks, and driving CI projects from idea through implementation. You'll also work closely with operations and support the broader engineering team.
If you want a desk job, this isn't it. If you want to get deep into composite process engineering at a company that's actually building things, keep reading.
What You'll Do
  • Lead process development for filament wound composite products - from equipment and tooling design through production launch
  • Own continuous improvement initiatives: identify problems, build the project plan, drive resolution
  • Support pultrusion and filament winding operations with root cause analysis and technical troubleshooting
  • Design fixtures and tooling in SolidWorks
  • Develop and maintain work instructions, troubleshooting guides, and process documentation
  • Scope and manage capital projects - new equipment, new tooling, process upgrades
  • Use our test lab to optimize composite designs for performance and manufacturability
  • Support off-shift trials when needed
  • Coach and train operations crews on composite processes and equipment

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (mechanical, manufacturing, composites, or chemical preferred); GPA 3.25+
  • 2-4 years of hands-on process engineering experience in a continuous manufacturing environment; recent composites experience - filament winding or pultrusion - strongly preferred
  • SolidWorks proficiency: parts, assemblies, drawings, GD&T per ANSI Y14.5
  • Familiarity with thermoset resin systems (polyester, vinyl-ester, urethane) is a real plus
  • You can work from a goal, break it into tasks, and execute without needing to be managed
  • Strong communicator across all levels - line operators to executives
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and consistent with documentation

Physical Work Conditions
Time should be split between the floor and the office or meeting rooms ranging anywhere from 25% to 75% on the production floor or engineering labs. While working on the floor there will be work with and around moving machinery, fumes and chemicals. Office work requires sitting at a desk, using a computer and phone.
The compensation range for this position is $74,386 - $102,280. Final offers may vary based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The posted range represents the expected earning potential for this position within the current organizational budget and market conditions.
Who We Are
For over 30 years, GEOTEK has been internationally recognized for industry leading composite technologies, engineering, and service. The company has grown PUPI® into the leading global provider of fiberglass crossarms and is committed to adding and developing other market-leading composite brands for the world's infrastructure. The company was founded in 1990 to manufacture and market Common Sense Fencing and other pultruded fiberglass products. Early on GEOTEK also began producing utility composite crossarms for Pultruded Utility Products, Inc., a company it acquired in 2000 and renamed Pultruded Utility Products International (PUPI) to reflect the global opportunity for these products. PUPI (pronounced "puppy") is a brand of GEOTEK. Using proprietary processes and several patented inventions, GEOTEK manufactures and distributes engineered fiberglass composites that are used by the transmission and distribution power lines and substations. The company is well positioned for sustained growth and profitability through market expansion and new product offerings.
Our Purpose
As the global leader in composite crossarms, we aim to broaden our engineered composite products in infrastructure applications with light poles and beyond.
Mission
Enhance the world's infrastructure with engineered composite products.
Vision
Develop, acquire, and grow respected composite product brands; where each product line delivers market-leading reliability, performance, and value to global infrastructure customers.
