Job Summary

As the Nanofab safety officer, you will oversee cleanroom and laboratory safety, chemical handling, and gas monitoring systems, write standard operating procedures and reports, and train and monitor researchers on safety protocols and equipment operation. You will report to the cleanroom manager and assist in the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of cleanroom equipment. The job includes working with professors, researchers, students, staff and other departments such as environmental health and safety, building facilities, the college of engineering, campus design and planning for facilities, safety, and equipment installation needs. This position will be required to be physically located on campus to support on-site operations. Requires a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry or related field.

Responsibilities LAB SAFETY
  • Be responsible for lab safety systems including hazardous gas monitoring, chemical handling, alarms, ppe, etc.
  • Be available to respond to emergency alarms and situations that arise both during and outside of normal working hours.
  • Provide lab user safety training and ensure and enforce compliance with safety practices and protocols.
  • Review and evaluate and approve new material requests, write reports and recommendations
  • Work with University of Utah Environmental Health and Safety department on safety concerns and questions.
  • Identify and mitigate potential safety hazards and risks.
  • Maintain safety data sheets and protocols.
  • College safety committee member
CHEMICAL AND MATERIAL HANDLING
  • Maintain chemical, material, and gas inventory and database.
  • Oversee chemical and gas supplies, labeling, and handling systems.
  • Maintain and monitor gas cabinets, gas delivery, gas abatement, and hazardous gas detection systems, and install new gas cylinders when necessary.
  • Oversee unwanted material disposal (independantly and staff assisted)
  • EHS compliance tasks such as lab profile and inspection related activites
MAINTENANCE OF CLEANROOM , EQUIPMENT , AND SUPPORTING INFRASTRUCTURE
  • Assist in troubleshoot, repair, and maintain cleanroom process equipment.
  • Assist in training researchers on correct operation of fabrication tools.
  • Run microfabrication work requests from research groups and outside companies.
  • Interface and coordinate with building group on facility maintenance of cleanroom support systems such as UPW , humidity, CDA , N2, BMS , AWN , House Vac, HVAC , etc.
  • Set up new cleanroom members and manage door card swipe access systems and hardware and software equipment interlocks.
  • Oversee and coordinate lab cleanliness with janitorial services.
  • Monitor feed gas usage and replenshment
  • Remediation system support
  • Assist with new equipment planning and installation.
  • Help TA’s prepare for their teaching lab sections and provide support for the students in the teaching lab sections
  • Oversee cleanroom wet-bench operations including chemical handling and inventory, filling, draining and reclamation.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT : 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Chemical Engineer, I: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or a master’s (or equivalency) degree.

Chemical Engineer, II: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

Chemical Engineer, III : Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences

Requires a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry or related field.
