What is a chargeback?

A Chargeback job typically involves reviewing and processing disputed transactions on behalf of a company, usually in the financial, banking, or e-commerce sectors. Chargeback specialists investigate claims from customers who request refunds due to fraud, billing errors, or dissatisfaction. They analyze transaction details, gather evidence, and communicate with payment processors or banks to resolve disputes. The role requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of payment processing systems, and compliance with financial regulations. Effective dispute resolution helps minimize financial losses and maintain customer satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the chargeback position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Chargeback role, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of payment processing or financial operations, typically supported by experience in banking or e-commerce environments. Familiarity with chargeback management platforms, dispute resolution systems, and payment network regulations (such as Visa and Mastercard rules) is often required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help you stand out by ensuring effective collaboration with merchants, banks, and customers. These skills are essential for accurately assessing disputes, minimizing financial losses, and maintaining positive professional relationships.

What are the common challenges faced in a chargeback role, and how are they handled?

One common challenge in a Chargeback position is managing a high volume of complex dispute cases within tight deadlines, which requires strong organization and prioritization skills. You may also need to interpret ambiguous documentation and apply evolving payment network rules to resolve claims accurately. Successful chargeback specialists work closely with internal teams such as fraud prevention and customer service, as well as external partners like banks and payment processors, to gather evidence and reach fair outcomes. Over time, this experience can open doors to advanced roles in risk management, compliance, or financial operations.

How to become a chargeback analyst?

To become a chargeback analyst, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, with some roles preferring a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Relevant skills include attention to detail, knowledge of payment processing systems, and familiarity with dispute management tools. Gaining experience in fraud prevention, customer service, or financial analysis can also improve job prospects.

The ideal candidate will have a technical degree, 2-4 years of experience in software or a related technical discipline, strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, and working knowledge of how AI and agentic AI can improve software delivery, testing, documentation, and operational support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical resource for Market Access and revenue management systems, including sell-side contracting software, Model N, global pricing management, government spend transparency reporting, gross-to-net, rebates, and chargeback processing platforms.

  • Execute hands-on software configuration changes, enhancement requests, defect fixes, data updates, testing support, and release activities across assigned platforms.

  • Rapidly learn the functional and technical domain of pricing, contracting, market access, revenue management, rebates, and chargebacks in the life sciences industry.

  • Translate documented requirements, user stories, defects, and support needs into technical configuration, system changes, test scenarios, and operational documentation.

  • Support the full software development lifecycle, including requirements intake, design, configuration, testing, deployment, validation, release management, and post-release support.

  • Work closely with internal technical teams, managed service providers, vendors, QA, compliance, and validation partners to deliver platform changes safely and effectively.

  • Troubleshoot system issues, analyze root causes, document findings, and implement approved fixes or configuration changes within established change control processes.

  • Maintain technical documentation, configuration records, test evidence, release notes, and support materials required for regulated systems and audit readiness.

  • Apply AI and agentic AI concepts to improve software development lifecycle activities, including requirements analysis, configuration support, testing, documentation, issue triage, and operational efficiency.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), including requirements, design, configuration, testing, deployment, release management, change control, and operational support.

  • Hands-on technical aptitude with the ability to learn enterprise software platforms, execute configuration changes, troubleshoot issues, and support system enhancements.

  • Ability to rapidly build functional and technical knowledge in pricing, contracting, market access, revenue management, gross-to-net, government reporting, rebates, and chargeback processes.

  • Working knowledge of AI and agentic AI concepts, with an interest in applying them to software delivery, testing, documentation, support, and productivity improvement.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate system behavior, identify root causes, and document clear technical findings.

  • Attention to detail and discipline in following system lifecycle, change management, testing, validation, and documentation requirements for regulated systems.

  • Ability to work effectively with technical teams, vendors, managed service providers, QA, compliance, validation, and support teams.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document technical changes, issues, test results, and release activities in a concise and accurate manner.

  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced environment where priorities, systems, and business processes continue to evolve.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, data science, or another technical discipline; equivalent technical experience may be considered.

  • Typically requires 2-4 years of experience in software development, enterprise systems, technical configuration, systems analysis, data, or a related technical discipline.

  • Experience working within the software development lifecycle, including requirements, configuration, testing, release management, change control, documentation, and production support.

  • Exposure to enterprise software platforms, configuration-driven applications, integrations, reporting tools, or data management processes is preferred.

  • Exposure to Model N, sell-side contracting, government spend transparency reporting, gross-to-net, revenue management, rebates, or chargeback processing is preferred but not required.

  • Interest in life sciences commercial operations, market access technology, regulated systems, and the technical platforms that support revenue management processes.
