Company Description Lilian G. Tsang serves as the Chapter 13 Trustee for the Eastern District of California, overseeing the administration of Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases. The Trustee’s office works closely with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, creditors, and debtors to ensure compliance with bankruptcy laws and efficient administration of chapter 13 plans. The team focuses on accurate case management, diligent review of financial information, and timely distribution of funds to creditors. Staff members collaborate in a professional legal environment that values integrity, attention to detail, and public service. The office is based in Modesto, CA and serves a diverse community of individuals and families seeking financial reorganization.

Role Description The Staff Attorney will work full time in a hybrid capacity, with primary duties based in the Modesto, CA office and some work-from-home flexibility. Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing Chapter 13 plans, pleadings, and motions; analyzing case files for compliance with bankruptcy law; and providing legal recommendations to the Trustee. The role involves drafting legal documents, memoranda, and correspondence; preparing for and attending court hearings; and communicating with debtors’ counsel, creditors, and court personnel. The Staff Attorney will conduct legal research, evaluate complex financial and legal issues, and assist with policy development and internal procedures. This position requires consistent collaboration with a small legal and administrative team to support efficient case administration and high-quality legal oversight.

Qualifications

  • Strong foundation in legal analysis, with demonstrated ability to interpret and apply statutes, rules, and case law.
  • 0-10 years of Bankruptcy Law or related practice areas experience, with capacity to analyze legal rights and obligations in a structured setting. We are willing to train the right candidate.
  • Experience providing legal advice and guidance to internal team in a professional legal environment.
  • Proficiency in legal research, including use of electronic research tools and preparation of clear, well-supported analyses.
  • Effective negotiation skills for resolving disputes, facilitating case stipulations, and managing communications among parties.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; admission to the State Bar of California in good standing or eligibility for prompt admission.
  • Prior experience in bankruptcy, civil litigation, or related judicial or trustee environments is preferred but not required.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with meticulous attention to detail in drafting and reviewing legal documents.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume caseload, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively in a hybrid setting.
  • High ethical standards, sound judgment, and commitment to public service and equitable treatment of all parties.
