This is an hourly, non-exempt position. Pay rates are based on education, skill,and experience level.
PositionSummary
A Chaplain is a spiritual leader whoprovides religious and emotional support to Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office(MCSO), and Mecklenburg County communities. They offer counsel, conductreligious services, perform rituals, facilitate programs within MCSO andprovide comfort and guidance to those in need. Chaplains often work with peopleof different faiths and beliefs, promoting inclusivity and respectingdiversity. To ensure the residents housed in the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Officedetention facilities have the opportunity to address the issues they face on aspiritual level that may have contributed to their criminal behavior andsubsequent incarceration through Spiritualmaintenance, Pastoral Care, and various religious studies. To providespiritual care and encouragement of residents and to respond with compassionand support of all faiths in need of spiritual guidance or pastoral counselingduring a time of personal crisis. They possess strong communication andinterpersonal skills, and their role is to offer spiritual care and support toindividuals and communities during challenging times.
EssentialFunctions
  • Fulfill duties assigned by the Sr. Chaplain within MCSO facilities.
  • Ensure appropriate response to resident requests for spiritual and moral guidance.
  • Schedule and coordinate faith community volunteer programs for all Facilities to ensure a variety of spiritual programming opportunities for residents and the orderly operations of the facilities.
  • Maintain a waiting list of volunteers and programming opportunities.
    Process security clearances for all faith community religious leaders and individuals, and approve or disapprove, based on need, security, and the orderly operation of the facility.
  • Provide training as needed, but no less than once per quarter, for all new volunteers and maintain registry at all facilities.
  • Conduct or participate in special religious services or programs when spiritual or religious involvement is proper.
  • Administer rites, sacraments, or ordinances when appropriate and qualified.
  • Respond to any resident/staff crisis within the detention center, such as the death of a family member or fellow staff member of death of a resident.
  • Provide and maintain liaison with faith community and other community agencies to contribute to the detention center ministry program through contribution of time and resources to the residents.
  • Prepare reports and maintain records necessary for proper documentation of services provided, resident participation, volunteer participation, and other reports required by MCSO.
  • Provide support to MCSO staff in times of need.

Qualifications:
Bachelor'sDegree in a related field, minimum three years in Prison and Detentionministry.
Currently ordained, duly accredited by, and in good standing with a nationally recognized denomination with direct experience in a correctional institution
Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
Ministerial License
