Job description

Location: Camp Keystone, Starke, Florida
Position Type: Temporary Full-Time
About this opportunity:
Plans, directs, facilitates, coordinates, and monitors the day-to-day medical needs of camp staff and campers; reviews medical information and stays abreast of techniques and medical information needed to maintain a healthy environment; offers medical advice to the staff and campers as needed; dispenses medications to staff and campers as needed according to physician's prescription. Supervises the activities of the nursing staff and ensures compliance with established policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provides or ensures orientation is provided that includes standing orders, clinic hours, specific camper health and social needs, health center procedures, emergency procedures, growth and development of age groups, staff health assessment of campers, polices and contacting parents, transportation to outside health facilities, accident prevention and risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting.
  • Develops, plans, delivers and assesses the effectiveness of health-related instruction and trainings at the camp, (i.e. C.P.R., first aid, etc.).
  • Trains the counselors in regard to their responsibilities in noting and reporting illness, injury or unsafe practices and conditions that might contribute to camper or staff accidents.
  • Supervises the activities of the nursing staff and ensures compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ensures the health and safety of all campers and staff by providing a safe environment as determined by the ACA Health and Wellness Accreditation standards.
  • Assists at registration by collecting Health History Forms and medication and be responsible for all drugs, medicines and kits brought to camp by campers.
  • Oversees the registration process of checking campers upon arrival at camp for lice and other evidence of illness, injury or communicable disease.
  • Reviews all Health History Forms (Camper and Staff) within 24 hours of their arrival (verify at camp that everyone at camp has a Health History Form), and identify any camper or staff who has a health or medical situation that needs to be discussed with the Camp Director.
  • For each cabin, list for the counselors, all camper medications or medical problems that they need to be aware of.
  • For campers who come to camp with medicines - dispense all medication and treatments in accordance with directions on the medicine bottles, and keep accurate records of such treatments on camper medical form.
  • Facilitates the initial set-up of the Health Center; ensures the Health Center area and supplies are clean and free from debris at all times.
  • Identifies potential hazards and responds appropriately and in a timely manner. All medications are to be locked up at all times.
  • Maintains accountability and inventory of all medical supplies; orders or purchases needed supplies as approved.
  • Maintains a daily log of all transactions and staff and camper visitations to the Health Center; completes a statistical report on health services rendered and provides to appropriate staff on a predetermined schedule.
  • Reports all admissions to the DCCC/Associate Camp Director.
  • If asked to contact the parent/guardian of camper, document this call in the communication log.
  • Compiles a listing of doctors and hospitals in the immediate area and corresponding driving directions to the facility to be used in an urgent time of need.
  • Evaluates campers and staff and determines appropriate treatment based on symptoms.
  • Follows-up with sick campers and staff to determine if an emergency doctor's visit is necessary.
  • Assists in organizing transportation to doctor and/or hospital as needed.
  • Fill out necessary insurance claim form.
  • Orders meal trays for sick campers and staff as needed.
  • Be on call for all camp medical emergencies.
  • Analyzes the sanitary conditions of the camp on a predetermined schedule; reports any deviances to the DCCC/Associate Camp Director.
  • Participates enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Sits with camper tables during meals and serve as a table monitor when needed.
  • Keeps personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection.
  • Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.
  • Cleans and disinfects Health Center daily.
  • Washes all linens used in the Health Center.
  • Prepares and replenishes first aid kits for use in programs, dining hall, vehicles, cabins, pool, lake, challenge course, office, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What we are looking for in you:
  • Current Registered Nurse certification required AND Four years progressively responsible experience supervising nursing activities, preferably in a camp, school or related environment preferred, OR
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Current State License as a Registered Nurse (RN) - Florida
  • CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Current and Valid State Driver's License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Some physical requirements of the Camp Nurse position could be endurance including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.

Camp Staff Orientation will be held 06/2/2025 - 06/8/2025 and participation is required. The 2025 Summer Camp Program will be held 06/9/2025 - 07/19/2025. If you are unable to work the entire program session, please let us know on your application.
