Cgi Designer information

How do you become a CGI designer?

To become a CGI designer, you typically need a bachelor's degree in computer graphics, animation, or a related field, along with proficiency in industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, or Adobe After Effects. Building a strong portfolio showcasing your work and gaining experience through internships or freelance projects are also important steps in establishing a career in CGI design.

What is a CGI designer?

CGI Designers, or Computer-Generated Imagery Designers, are professionals who create visual content using computer software. They design and produce 2D and 3D graphics, animations, and visual effects for movies, video games, advertisements, and other media. CGI Designers work closely with directors, artists, and other team members to bring imaginative concepts to life. Their expertise requires a strong understanding of design principles, computer graphics software, and sometimes programming skills.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a CGI designer?

To thrive as a CGI Designer, you need expertise in 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, and animation, often supported by a degree in graphic design, animation, or a related field. Mastery of industry-standard software like Autodesk Maya, Blender, or Cinema 4D, as well as familiarity with rendering engines and sometimes certifications, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication help CGI Designers collaborate seamlessly within multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing visually compelling digital content that meets project goals and client expectations.

What is the difference between Cgi Designer vs 3D Artist?

Both Cgi Designers and 3D Artists work with 3D modeling and rendering, often in similar industries like gaming and film. However, Cgi Designers typically focus on creating visual effects and integrating CGI into live-action footage, while 3D Artists often concentrate on creating detailed models and assets for various media. Their skills overlap, but their roles emphasize different aspects of the 3D production process.

Can I work remotely in a CGI Designer career?

CGI Designers can often work remotely, especially when their tasks involve digital modeling, rendering, and animation that can be performed with specialized software from any location. However, some roles may require on-site presence for collaboration, client meetings, or access to specific equipment. Remote work opportunities depend on the employer, project requirements, and the designer's skills with tools like Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max.

How do CGI designers collaborate with other departments during a project?

CGI Designers often work closely with directors, animators, and visual effects supervisors to ensure their digital creations align with the overall vision of the project. Collaboration is essential, as designers need to interpret feedback from creative leads and integrate CGI with live-action footage or other digital assets. Regular meetings and reviews are common, and designers frequently adjust their work to match storyboards, timing requirements, and technical specifications provided by other departments. This teamwork helps maintain consistency and ensures high-quality, cohesive visual results.

Job Description

The Print & CGI Lead is a capacity-level leadership role responsible for overseeing, developing, and continuously improving print, graphic design, CGI, and retouching capabilities across the organization.

This role acts as a functional authority and strategic partner to department managers, creative teams, and clients, ensuring alignment with company strategy, creative standards, production excellence, and scalability objectives. While not a direct line manager for all graphic designers, CGI artists, or retouchers, the Print & CGI Lead provides expert guidance, governance, coaching, and escalation support across multiple teams and client ecosystems.

The role is a strong client-facing dimension, focusing on quality consistency, operational maturity, efficiency, and long-term capability growth within print-led creative environments.

Responsibilities

Functional Leadership & Governance

  • Provide functional leadership oversight for Print, Graphic Design, CGI, and Retouching teams across the organization
  • Define, standardize, and evolve creative, print, and CGI production standards, best practices, and quality benchmarks
  • Ensure alignment with company strategy, creative vision, production policies, and delivery standards
  • Act as a senior escalation point for managers and clients in complex, high-risk, or high-visibility creative deliveries
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, scalability, and creative excellence

People Development & Capability Building

  • Support department managers in recruitment, onboarding, and performance evaluation of graphic designers, CGI artists, and retouchers
  • Assess competencies and define clear growth paths and skill frameworks across print and CGI disciplines
  • Facilitate structured knowledge transfer from senior creatives and international hubs to embed best practices, advanced techniques, and group-aligned workflows across print, CGI, and retouching teams.
  • Design and deliver training programs, onboarding frameworks, and knowledge-sharing initiatives for print and CGI teams

Client Advisory & Ecosystem Optimization

  • Serve as a capacity expert on print, CGI, and retouching capabilities, guiding the design, implementation, and scaling of creative production and workflow models
  • Analyze client delivery ecosystems to identify creative, production, and workflow risks or inefficiencies
  • Propose and implement tailored solutions to optimize client workflows, team structures, creative processes, and operational maturity
  • Identify and resolve organizational and client-side bottlenecks through scalable creative processes and standards
  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients on print feasibility, creative quality, production constraints, and innovation opportunities

Operational Excellence & Scalability

  • Standardize and adapt print and CGI workflows, tools, templates, and documentation
  • Ensure strong collaboration between print, CGI, retouching, project management, and production stakeholders
  • Oversee and validate costs estimates linked to print and CGI production activities
  • Monitor performance indicators related to quality consistency, turnaround time, and scalability
  • Drive responsible AI adoption across print and CGI capabilities to improve quality consistency, scalability, automation, and creative efficiency.

Success Metrics & Outcomes

  • Elevation of creative rigor and production expertise across print, CGI, and retouching disciplines
  • Sustained client confidence driven by consistent creative quality, feasibility guidance, and senior-level advisory
  • Effective and repeatable talent acquisition and onboarding supporting long-term creative growth
  • Implementation of production standards and workflows that balance consistency with creative adaptability
  • Progression in creative leadership, quality ownership, and decision-making maturity
  • Increased ability to scale print and CGI production without compromising quality or efficiency
  • Strong, seamless collaboration between creative, production, project management, and client teams
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in print-focused creative environments, with exposure to CGI and high-end retouching as complementary disciplines
  • Proven experience in a senior or capacity leadership role, providing oversight, standards, and governance across multiple creative teams
  • Deep expertise in print design, layout, typography, color theory, image composition, and photo manipulation, with a strong eye for detail and aesthetics
  • Strong understanding of print production processes, including prepress, color management, file preparation, and vendor constraints
  • Solid knowledge of CGI and retouching workflows, tools, and integration within print-led creative ecosystems
  • Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and strong familiarity with related creative and production tools
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex client and organizational ecosystems and drive operational and creative improvements
  • Strong systems-thinking mindset, with the ability to design scalable creative processes and challenge the status quo
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence senior clients and internal leaders
  • Proven capability to act as a strategic advisor rather than a hands-on contributor
  • Ability to define and measure outcomes related to quality consistency, efficiency, scalability, and creative maturity
  • Fluent in English and French (mandatory)
Additional Information
  • Opportunity to develop in a stable company with an established position in the market.
  • Extensive range of online training courses in cooperation with reputable market partners.
  • Opportunity to participate in international and local development projects and programmes.
  • International working environment.
