What are CFOs in Canada?

CFOs, or Chief Financial Officers, in Canada are senior executives responsible for managing the financial actions of a company. Their duties include financial planning, risk management, record-keeping, and reporting to higher management. They play a key role in developing business strategies, ensuring compliance with Canadian financial regulations, and overseeing accounting and finance teams. A Canadian CFO must also stay updated on local tax laws, economic trends, and corporate governance standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CFO in Canada, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CFO in Canada, you need strong financial acumen, strategic planning skills, and a recognized accounting designation such as CPA or CA. Expertise in financial management systems, ERP software, and compliance with Canadian financial regulations is essential. Outstanding leadership, communication, and decision-making abilities help drive organizational success and foster trust with stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring financial stability, regulatory compliance, and effective business growth in a competitive market.

What are the main challenges a CFO in Canada typically faces when managing cross-border financial operations?

A CFO in Canada often manages financial operations that extend beyond national borders, which presents unique challenges such as navigating different tax regulations, currency fluctuations, and compliance requirements in multiple jurisdictions. Coordinating with international teams and ensuring accurate financial reporting according to both Canadian and international accounting standards (like IFRS) is essential. Effective communication and collaboration with legal, operations, and tax advisors are key to successfully managing these complexities. Additionally, staying updated on evolving trade agreements and regulatory changes is crucial for mitigating risks and ensuring smooth cross-border transactions.

Job description

Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Who: A well-established professional services firm.
What: Seeking a strategic, data-driven CFO to lead financial modeling, capital strategy, and M&A execution as part of a 3-person executive team.
When: Hiring immediately to support the company’s growth and acquisition initiatives.

This executive role is ideal for a finance leader with strong banking and analytical capabilities, ready to take charge of financial strategy in a scaling, acquisition-driven environment. • Manage banking relationships, debt structures, and covenant compliance

  • Implement advanced capital and cash management strategies

  • Deliver profitability insights across clients, teams, and service lines

  • Collaborate with internal data teams using tools like Power BI

  • Represent finance in board-level strategy discussions

  • Lead and mentor a finance team and oversee external CPA relationships

Qualifications:

  • Proven CFO experience or a Controller-level leader ready to step up

  • Expertise in financial modeling, forecasting, and capital strategy

  • Background in managing M&A transactions and banking relationships

  • Comfortable with analytics platforms (Power BI or similar)

  • Familiarity with EOS or structured leadership frameworks preferred

  • CPA, MBA, or equivalent credentials a plus

  • Must be located in Atlanta and thrive in an in-office leadership role
