About the Role:
The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) plays a critical role in ensuring the integrity and safety of welded structures within the professional, scientific, and technical services industry. This position is responsible for conducting thorough inspections and evaluations of welding processes, materials, and finished welds to verify compliance with industry codes and standards. The CWI collaborates closely with engineers, fabricators, and project managers to identify potential defects and recommend corrective actions, thereby preventing structural failures and ensuring quality assurance. This role demands a deep understanding of welding techniques, metallurgy, and inspection methods to maintain high standards of workmanship and safety. Ultimately, the CWI contributes to the successful completion of projects by guaranteeing that all welding activities meet regulatory and client specifications across diverse applications in the United States.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Certification as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) from the American Welding Society (AWS) or equivalent recognized body.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in welding inspection or a related technical field within the professional, scientific, or technical services industry.
- Strong knowledge of welding processes, metallurgy, and relevant codes such as AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, and API standards.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, welding procedure specifications (WPS), and inspection reports.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively document findings and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional certifications such as Certified Radiographic Interpreter (CRI) or Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) certifications.
- Experience with advanced inspection technologies including ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, and radiographic testing.
- Familiarity with quality management systems such as ISO 9001 and experience in auditing welding quality processes.
- Prior experience working on large-scale infrastructure, oil and gas, or aerospace projects.
- Proficiency with digital inspection tools and software for reporting and data management.
Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed visual and non-destructive inspections of welds to assess quality and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Review welding procedures, qualifications, and documentation to ensure adherence to project specifications and regulatory requirements.
- Identify welding defects and discontinuities, document findings, and collaborate with fabrication teams to implement corrective measures.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and prepare comprehensive reports for clients, regulatory bodies, and internal stakeholders.
- Stay current with industry developments, standards, and best practices to continuously improve inspection techniques and processes.
Skills:
The CWI utilizes a comprehensive set of technical skills daily to evaluate weld quality and ensure compliance with stringent industry standards. Proficiency in interpreting complex engineering drawings and welding procedure specifications enables accurate assessment of welds against project requirements. Strong analytical skills are essential for identifying defects and determining their impact on structural integrity, while effective communication skills facilitate clear reporting and collaboration with project teams. Familiarity with non-destructive testing methods enhances the ability to detect hidden flaws without damaging components. Additionally, staying updated with evolving codes and inspection technologies ensures the CWI maintains a high level of expertise, contributing to continuous improvement in welding quality assurance.
