Job Description:

Job Title: Food Service Manager

About Hy-Vee

At Hy-Vee, we believe the shortest distance between two people is a smile. We're seeking people with a passion for customer service, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to being part of a team that strives to make our customers' lives easier, healthier and happier.

The Role and Why It's Important

The Food Service Manager leads the full food service operation across the store, overseeing quality, staffing, menus, and profitability across the Market Grille, Mia Italian, Hy-Chi, and related departments. In this role, you'll partner with chefs and department managers to deliver innovative, high-quality food at a competitive price while building a team culture centered on hospitality and excellence.

If you are an experienced food service leader with a passion for great food, strong business instincts, and the ability to inspire a team, we'd love to have you on our team.

  • Estimate food and beverage costs, supervise portion control, and minimize waste through quantity management

  • Perform frequent checks to ensure consistent, high-quality food preparation and service

  • Set and uphold department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance, and overall profitability

  • Review daily production lists, assign tasks to department employees, and scan the kitchen area for cleanliness, repairs, and safety needs

  • Ensure food display cases are rotated and replenished and that adequate staff are on hand to meet customer needs

  • Direct hiring, training, and scheduling of food service personnel

  • Analyze weekly and monthly sales trends, compare to actuals, prepare ad projections, and write ads

  • Work with management to plan marketing, advertising, and special restaurant functions

  • Monitor staff and customers to ensure health, safety, and liquor regulation compliance

  • Investigate and resolve complaints concerning food quality and service

  • Arrange for maintenance and repair of equipment and other services

  • Follow all food safety guidelines and ensure department employees remain in compliance

  • Assume supervisory duties of food service employees in the absence of a Department Manager or Assistant Department Manager

  • Adhere to all Hy-Vee policies and individual store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

  • Demonstrate excellent hospitality skills and a genuine passion for delivering outstanding customer and guest experiences

  • Lead and develop a team, maintaining high standards and a positive, energetic work environment

  • Solve practical problems and interpret instructions across a variety of situations with limited standardization

  • Use math skills including fractions, decimals, and percentages for cost analysis, pricing, and scheduling

  • File, post, and organize materials; conduct interviews; and guide and direct team members with confidence

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers, team members, vendors, and store leadership

You will frequently work in cool conditions with exposure to dampness, equipment noise and vibrations, possible equipment movement hazards from slicers and choppers, and daily exposure to cleaning chemicals and solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
