Job description

Accounting Associate

Harvey & Company Ltd. – St. John’s, NL
Permanent, Full-Time
Reports to: Controller

Ready for the Next Step in Your Accounting Career?

Harvey & Company Ltd. is looking for an experienced Accounting Associate to join our finance team in St. John’s.

Reporting directly to the Controller, the Accounting Associate will play an important role in supporting the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting activities of Harvey & Company. This is an excellent opportunity for a mid-career accounting professional who has built a solid accounting foundation and is ready for broader exposure, increased responsibility, and the opportunity to contribute to the financial performance of an operating business.

You will work closely with the Controller and collaborate with managers across the organization, gaining exposure to financial reporting, month-end processes, budgeting, analysis, internal controls, systems, and process improvement.

We are looking for someone who is curious about the business behind the numbers, takes ownership of their work, and wants to continue developing as a well-rounded accounting professional.

What You'll Do

Working closely with the Controller, your responsibilities will include:

  • Participate in the preparation of monthly and year-end financial statements.
  • Complete account reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
  • Support month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Assist with accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and general ledger activities.
  • Prepare and review journal entries and supporting documentation.
  • Assist the Controller with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
  • Prepare financial and operational reports for management.
  • Analyze financial results, trends, margins, expenses, and variances.
  • Help identify the drivers behind financial results and opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist with cash flow monitoring and working capital management.
  • Support inventory accounting and reconciliation.
  • Assist with fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accruals, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Support the Controller in working with external accountants, auditors, financial institutions, and other professional advisors.
  • Help develop and strengthen accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to improve reporting and streamline financial processes.
  • Work with managers across Sales, Parts, Service, and Administration to support financial understanding and accountability.
  • Take ownership of assigned accounting functions and projects.
  • Provide additional financial and accounting support to the Controller as required.

Who We're Looking For

You have already built a strong accounting foundation and are looking for an organization where you can continue to grow professionally and take on greater responsibility.

Ideally, you bring:

  • 3–7 years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and month-end processes.
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with financial data.
  • Experience with accounting, ERP, or business management systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail while still being able to see the bigger picture.
  • The ability to organize priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to work with managers throughout the organization.
  • A desire to learn, take ownership, and continually expand your responsibilities.

Experience in a dealership, distribution, equipment, transportation, construction, or other operationally focused business would be considered an asset.

Why Harvey & Company?

Harvey & Company Ltd. is an established Newfoundland and Labrador business serving the province's commercial truck and heavy-equipment industries.

Our operations include truck and equipment sales, parts, service, and support, creating a diverse and interesting accounting environment. You'll gain exposure to inventory, service operations, sales, margins, working capital, capital assets, multiple departments, and the financial drivers of an operating business.

This is an opportunity to work directly with the Controller while developing a broad understanding of both accounting and business operations.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Comprehensive group benefits
  • Permanent, full-time employment
  • Professional development and training support
  • Direct mentorship and support from the Controller
  • Exposure to senior leadership and operational decision-making
  • Increasing responsibility as you develop
  • A collaborative and supportive work environment
  • Opportunities to improve systems and processes rather than simply maintain them
  • Professional growth within an established Newfoundland and Labrador company
