What is a cellular network?

A Cellular Network job involves designing, maintaining, and optimizing mobile communication systems that enable wireless connectivity. Professionals in this field work with technologies like 4G, 5G, and IoT to ensure reliable network performance. Roles may include network engineers, technicians, or analysts who troubleshoot issues, expand coverage, and enhance data speeds. These jobs require expertise in radio frequencies, network protocols, and telecommunications infrastructure.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals working in cellular network roles?

Professionals in cellular network roles often encounter challenges such as optimizing network coverage in densely populated or geographically diverse areas, managing interference, and ensuring consistent quality of service during peak usage periods. Balancing the need for rapid deployment of new technologies (like 5G) with maintaining existing network infrastructure can also be demanding. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including field technicians, software developers, and project managers—is essential for troubleshooting and deploying solutions efficiently. Additionally, staying updated on evolving standards and rapidly advancing technologies is a continuous aspect of the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the cellular network position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Cellular Network Engineer role, you need a strong foundation in wireless communication principles, signal processing, and telecommunications engineering, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with network planning tools, RF optimization software, and certifications like CCNA or CWNA is highly valued. Analytical thinking, effective communication, and strong problem-solving skills help engineers excel in fast-paced and collaborative environments. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable and efficient network performance, addressing technical issues, and supporting seamless mobile connectivity for users.

Job description

For more than 30 years, Aeris has been a global leader in cellular IoT, powering connected solutions across automotive, utilities and energy, fleet management and logistics, medical devices, and manufacturing. Today, Aeris supports a global ecosystem of 7,000 enterprise customers, 30 mobile network operator partners, more than 115 million connected devices, and 45 million connected cars worldwide. Through secure, scalable, and borderless connectivity solutions, Aeris helps organizations simplify operations, improve performance, and accelerate growth in an increasingly connected world.

Role Overview

Aeris is seeking a Network Architect to lead the evolution of our 5G Standalone (5G SA) network architecture strategy and deployment efforts across global markets. This role sits at the center of some of the company’s most critical network initiatives and will serve as a key technical leader guiding architecture decisions that directly support Aeris’ global IoT expansion.

This is a highly technical and highly visible role requiring deep end-to-end understanding of cellular network technologies across 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G environments. The successful candidate will act as the technical face of network engineering both internally and externally, partnering across networking, product management, sales, marketing, and operations teams while communicating with stakeholders ranging from engineers to CTO-level customer leaders.

Key Responsibilities

5G SA Deployment Leadership

  • Lead end-to-end technical support activities for 5G SA deployments across Australia, Central Europe, and Singapore
  • Drive architecture ownership and technical decision-making for strategic 5G SA initiatives
  • Support successful deployment execution and long-term operational alignment

Architecture & Technical Strategy

  • Guide Aeris network evolution strategies in support of global IoT device expansion
  • Support technical architectures for strategic projects and new service initiatives
  • Help network engineering and operations teams create technical strategies aligned with business goals
  • Design secure telecom architectures including encryption, segmentation, IDS/firewall integration, and policy controls

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Create technical alignment across networking, product management, sales, marketing, and operations organizations
  • Collaborate closely with global engineering teams, including the networking team in Romania
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical, non-technical, and executive audience

Technical Leadership

  • Serve as the technical representative for the Networking organization internally and externally
  • Simplify and lead complex end-to-end technical programs
  • Support innovation and engineering problem-solving through modern AI-enabled workflows and idea validation approaches
Qualifications
  • Experience designing end-to-end architectures across RAN, transport, and core environments
  • Ability to design secure telecom architectures using encryption, segmentation, IDS/firewalls, and policy controls
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Strong communication skills across technical, business, and executive audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical deployment initiatives from architecture through execution
  • Prior experience working within a telecom vendor or similar telecommunications environment
  • Experience supporting large-scale network initiatives such as 5G SA or next-generation IP network deployments
  • Collaborative working style within cross-functional and globally distributed teams
  • Demonstrated curiosity, self-direction, and continuous learning mindset
  • Familiarity with the use of AI for engineering workflows, brainstorming, idea validation, and technical problem-solving
