What is Cell Science Systems?

Cell Science Systems is a biotechnology company specializing in laboratory testing services, particularly related to food sensitivities, allergies, and immune system function. They are best known for the Alcat Test, which helps identify food and chemical sensitivities by analyzing cellular responses. The company serves healthcare professionals and their patients by providing diagnostic tools to guide personalized nutrition and wellness plans. Their tests are used to manage a range of conditions, such as digestive issues, migraines, and chronic inflammation.

What are some typical challenges faced when working at Cell Science Systems, and how can new employees prepare for them?

At Cell Science Systems, employees often work in a fast-paced laboratory setting where attention to detail and strict adherence to protocols are crucial. One common challenge is staying up-to-date with rapidly evolving technologies and regulatory requirements in clinical diagnostics. New hires can prepare by familiarizing themselves with laboratory best practices, remaining adaptable to new procedures, and actively seeking guidance from experienced colleagues. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as research, quality assurance, and customer service, is also essential for success in this dynamic environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cell Science Systems specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cell Science Systems Specialist, you need a strong background in cellular biology, laboratory techniques, and analytical skills, often supported by a degree in life sciences or related certifications. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), flow cytometry, and molecular diagnostic tools is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting results and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate analysis, reliable diagnostics, and smooth laboratory operations in cell science environments.

What is the difference between Cell Science Systems vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectCell Science SystemsLaboratory Technician
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in biology, biotechnology, or related fieldUsually requires an associate's degree or certification in laboratory techniques
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, clinical testing facilitiesHospitals, research labs, industrial laboratories
Industry UsageUsed in biotech, pharmaceutical, and research industriesCommon across healthcare, research, and industrial sectors
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for entry-level research rolesCompared for technical support and testing roles

Cell Science Systems and Laboratory Technicians both work in laboratory settings within biotech and healthcare industries. While Cell Science Systems often requires a higher level of education and focuses on research and clinical testing, Laboratory Technicians may have more varied roles with different certification levels. Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right career path in the laboratory field.

Job description

Director, Scientific Operations & Partnerships - Cell Science
The Allen Institute accelerates science for a healthier world through large-scale research designed to answer some of the most complex questions in biology. Our multi-disciplinary teams generate foundational knowledge, tools, and data to understand how our brain, cells, and immune system work. We share our work openly so others can build on it, move faster, and ask bigger questions. We drive discovery forward and create new possibilities for improving human health.
The goal of Cellscapes is to create the first holistic framework to predict how cells self-organize into complex cell communities and tissues in order to program an entirely new kind of synthetic tissue that can be used to ask focused questions about how cells behave, including in response to drug interventions.
We are seeking a Director, Scientific Operations & Partnerships to help lead and scale the next phase of the CellScapes initiative - a long-term effort to understand how cells organize into functional multicellular systems and apply this understanding to engineer the programmable tissues of the future.
This is a highly collaborative leadership role focused on enabling ambitious, interdisciplinary science through organizational integration, operational coordination, and ecosystem building. Reporting to the Executive Vice President and serving as a key member of the CellScapes leadership team, the Director will help drive scientific momentum across programs, strengthen cross-functional alignment, build external partnerships, and support the continued evolution of CellScapes as a collaborative scientific hub.
The ideal candidate is an emotionally intelligent and system-oriented leader who combines operational excellence with strong relationship-building skills, scientific curiosity, and the ability to create clarity, momentum, and cohesion in complex and fast-moving environments.
At the Allen Institute, we believe that science is for everyone - and should be open to everyone. We are dedicated to combating biases and reducing barriers to STEM careers more broadly.
We also believe that science is better when it includes different perspectives and voices. We strive to make the Allen Institute a place where everyone feels like they belong and are empowered to do their best work in a supportive environment.
We are an equal-opportunity employer and strongly encourage people from all backgrounds to apply for our open positions.
