As of Jun 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for cell biology postdoc in the United States is $22.62, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.51 and $24.04 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cell Biology Postdoc, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cell Biology Postdoc, a strong background in cell biology, molecular biology, and experimental design is essential, typically supported by a Ph.D. in a relevant field. Proficiency with laboratory techniques such as cell culture, microscopy, flow cytometry, and data analysis software (like ImageJ or GraphPad Prism) is usually required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help researchers work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and present their findings. These competencies are important to drive innovative research, produce high-quality results, and advance scientific understanding in cell biology.

What does a Cell Biology Postdoc do?

A Cell Biology Postdoc is a researcher who has completed their PhD and conducts advanced research in the field of cell biology. They work on independent or collaborative projects to study the structure, function, and behavior of cells, often using techniques such as microscopy, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Their responsibilities include designing experiments, analyzing data, publishing findings, mentoring students, and presenting at conferences. The position is typically temporary and prepares scientists for academic, industry, or government research careers.

What is the difference between Cell Biology Postdoc vs Molecular Biologist?

AspectCell Biology PostdocMolecular Biologist
Required CredentialsPh.D. in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related fieldPh.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch laboratories, academic institutionsResearch labs, biotech or pharmaceutical companies
Employer & IndustryUniversities, research institutesBiotech firms, pharmaceutical companies, research institutions
Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

Both Cell Biology Postdocs and Molecular Biologists typically hold Ph.D. degrees and work in research environments. While Cell Biology Postdocs focus on cellular processes and structures, Molecular Biologists often study gene and protein functions at the molecular level. The roles overlap in skills and industry usage, but the primary focus and research scope differ slightly, making this comparison useful for those exploring career paths in biological research.

What are some common challenges a Cell Biology Postdoc might face during their research projects?

Cell Biology Postdocs often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex experiments, managing large datasets, and adapting to rapidly evolving scientific techniques. Balancing multiple projects and collaborating across interdisciplinary teams can also require strong organizational and communication skills. Additionally, postdocs may face pressure to publish results and secure funding, which can be demanding but also offers valuable experience for future independent research roles.

Job description

Summary
A postdoctoral fellowship is available in the Zhu Lab at MCW to investigate the molecular mechanisms of membrane protein complexes, including their oligomerization, trafficking and cell signaling, using advanced structural biology approaches. The successful candidate will lead an independent research project focused on G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and related membrane proteins, examining how receptor function is regulated by ligands, interacting partners, and the cellular environment. This work will integrate cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), biochemical and cell biology assays, and computational modeling to elucidate mechanisms of cell signaling and inform the development of novel therapeutic strategies for human disease.
The laboratory provides a rich, interdisciplinary environment with established platforms including bacterial, insect, and mammalian protein expression systems; cryo-EM workflows; biochemical and cell biology techniques; and computational biology tools.
The postdoctoral fellow is strongly encouraged to apply for internal and external fellowship funding, including programs such as the MCW Cancer Center Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellowship Program and Postdoctoral Researcher Seed Grants. Continued support for this position will be based on annual performance review.
Characteristics of a postdoctoral appointment:
It is expected that postdocs at MCW, with the assistance of their supervisor, will:
  • Transition to career independence through the development of professional skills that enable the postdoc to actively pursue a career of his/her own choosing.
  • Be supervised by at least one senior scholar who actively promotes the postdoc's professional development.
  • Establish an individual development plan (IDP) that incorporates equally the postdoc's career and training goals and the mentor's research goals.
  • Pursue basic or translational projects so long as effort is focused primarily on research.
  • Publish results of the postdoc's research and scholarship during their appointment.
  • The postdoctoral appointment is temporary by nature, the aggregate amount of time spent as a postdoc is recommended to not exceed five years (not including family medical leave or maternity/paternity leave).
  • As postdocs are important members of the host institution's community, appropriate levels of compensation, health care, and other benefits commensurate with their essential status should be afforded, independent of the postdoc's source of funding.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Design, plan, and execute independent research projects on GPCRs and cell signaling.
  • Perform membrane protein expression, purification, and structural studies using cryo-EM and/or crystallography.
  • Apply computational modeling and integrate structural, biochemical, and cell biology data.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data; develop and optimize methodologies.
  • Prepare manuscripts, reports, and presentations of research findings.
  • Participate in lab meetings and collaborate with team members.
  • Assist in grant writing and fellowship applications.
  • Mentor and train junior lab members as appropriate.
  • Maintain laboratory organization, supplies, and experimental workflows.
