How much do cancer cell biology jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for cancer cell biology in the United States is $35.51, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $29.09 and $40.38 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What biology jobs pay over $100k?

In cancer cell biology, roles such as senior research scientist, principal investigator, or biotech director often have salaries exceeding $100,000 annually. These positions typically require advanced degrees, extensive research experience, and skills in laboratory techniques, data analysis, and grant writing.

What are some careers in cell biology?

Careers in cell biology include roles such as research scientist, laboratory technician, and university professor, focusing on understanding cellular processes and mechanisms. These positions often require skills in microscopy, molecular techniques, and data analysis, and may involve working in academic, pharmaceutical, or biotech settings.

What is cancer cell biology?

Cancer cell biology is the study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that lead to the development and progression of cancer. This field focuses on understanding how normal cells transform into cancerous ones, how they grow uncontrollably, evade the immune system, and spread to other parts of the body. Researchers in cancer cell biology investigate genetic mutations, signaling pathways, and cellular behaviors that contribute to tumor growth, which helps in developing targeted therapies and better diagnostic tools.

Is cancer biology a good career?

Cancer cell biology is a specialized field within biomedical research focused on understanding cancer mechanisms, often requiring advanced degrees such as a PhD or master's. Careers in this area can be rewarding for those interested in research, diagnostics, and developing treatments, but they typically involve laboratory work, data analysis, and collaboration with healthcare professionals.

What is the difference between Cancer Cell Biology vs Molecular Biologist?

AspectCancer Cell BiologyMolecular Biologist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Biology, Biochemistry, or related; PhD often preferred for research rolesBachelor's or Master's in Biology, Biochemistry, or related; PhD common for advanced research
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, hospitals, biotech companies focusing on cancer researchResearch labs, biotech firms, academic institutions across various biological fields
Industry UsagePrimarily in cancer research, oncology, and medical research sectorsBroadly in biomedical research, genetics, molecular biology, and related fields

While both roles involve laboratory research and molecular techniques, Cancer Cell Biology specializes in understanding cancer mechanisms, whereas Molecular Biology covers a wider range of biological processes. Cancer Cell Biology is more focused on oncology applications, making it ideal for those interested specifically in cancer research careers.

What can I do with a cancer biology degree?

A cancer cell biology degree prepares individuals for careers in research, diagnostics, and treatment development related to cancer. Graduates can work in laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, healthcare institutions, or pursue advanced roles such as research scientists, clinical trial coordinators, or laboratory managers, often requiring skills in molecular techniques and data analysis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cancer Cell Biologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cancer Cell Biologist, you need a deep understanding of molecular and cellular biology, cancer genetics, and experimental research techniques, typically supported by an advanced degree (PhD or MS) in biology or a related field. Proficiency in laboratory techniques such as cell culture, flow cytometry, PCR, and bioinformatics tools, as well as familiarity with data analysis software, is essential. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help distinguish top professionals in this role. These skills are important for designing rigorous experiments, accurately interpreting complex data, and effectively sharing findings with the scientific community.

What are the typical collaborative interactions between a Cancer Cell Biology researcher and other departments in a research institution?

Cancer Cell Biology researchers frequently collaborate with colleagues from clinical oncology, bioinformatics, pathology, and pharmaceutical sciences. These collaborations can involve joint experiments, sharing of patient-derived samples, and the integration of large data sets for comprehensive studies. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams enhances research outcomes and provides exposure to different aspects of cancer research, fostering professional growth and opening up opportunities for cross-disciplinary learning and advancement.
