Job description

Minimum Qualifications Who we are: The Chesterfield County Department of Transportation (CDOT) is a dynamic group of professionals committed to excellence in transportation engineering and project delivery. CDOT manages a broad portfolio of projects ranging from the design and construction of crosswalks to major highways and bridges, working in close collaboration with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), who maintains those assets upon project completion. What you'll do: This Transportation Engineer will serve as a project manager for a range of infrastructure projects, assuming increasing responsibility.

In this position, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of solutions that enhance the safety and efficiency of our transportation systems. This position reports to a Principal Engineer and will be supported throughout your professional journey. In this role, you will: Assist in researching, analyzing, and evaluating transportation projects and initiatives.

Collaborate with other engineers to develop and implement innovative solutions to address transportation challenges. Manage consultants and contractors throughout the project delivery process from the inception of a project to construction completion and closeout. Engage with community stakeholders, government agencies, and other relevant partners to gather input and support for transportation initiatives.

Perform other work as required. What you bring: A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a minimum of four years of comparable work-related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)/ Engineer in Training (EIT) certification preferred.

Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. A growth mindset and an intrinsic motivation to do quality work. The ability to adapt to situations and think creatively to solve problems.

Time management skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to attend and present at public meetings or hearings.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and a functional knowledge of transportation and engineering-related software is preferred. Familiarity with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and VDOT standards, specifications, and procedures. A current, valid driver's license and a good driving record are required.

Based on the Virginia DMV point system, the record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by the applicant and presented at the time of the interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of the interview date.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required. The expected salary range for this position is $75,000 - $90,000. Starting salary is negotiable based on years of experience.
