Job description

The ISP Designer creates project designs, estimates costs, identifies appropriate materials and equipment, creates drawings, and estimates project timelines, for the placement of fiber optic cables, copper cables, poles, conduit, transmission equipment and associated electronics.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Design creates designs based on current and past network architectures, including concentration with as-builts.
  • When creating designs, use consistent and independent discretion to ensure designs meet company requirements.
  • Proficiently identify aerial, buried and underground design and construction methods including but not limited to, conduit, manholes and hand holes etc.
  • Communicate requirements to drafting and encoding personnel for the generation of customers’ engineering work order.
  • Use CAD and other software to develop engineering designs.
  • Perform route analysis and develop aerial and underground fiber route maps.
  • Verify fiber and mapping activities.
  • Maintain records of fiber splicing and topography.
  • Develop mitigation and restoration procedures for emergencies conditions such as fiber damage, power failures and other disasters.
  • Perform construction and maintenance of ISP infrastructure according to industry standards.
  • Maintain safety and security of ISP facility.
  • Determine scope, budget and schedules for ISP projects.
  • Monitor and control expenses within allotted budget.
  • Communicate project status and updates and provide weekly reporting.
  • Complete the assigned projects within the defined scope and timelines.
  • Perform routine inspections of ISP networks.
  • Collaborate with construction teams, including fiber splicers to ensure fiber optic cables and new underground network facilities are aligned with company standards.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent; college level courses in AutoCAD drafting/CATV design or equivalent experience
    • At least 3 years hands-on/field experience designing and construction of outside plant copper and fiber optic cable (UG, Aerial, Buried, BICS) and manhole and conduit design
    • Strong background in fiber plant support services
    • Knowledge of permitting process
    • Must understand the underlying theories and concepts of broadband communication, including fiber optics and Metro Ethernet networks.
