What are Catrinas?

Catrinas are elegant, skeletal female figures that originated in Mexican culture as a symbol during Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Traditionally, Catrinas are depicted wearing elaborate hats and dresses, representing a satirical portrayal of upper-class women and serving as a reminder that death is the great equalizer. The original concept was created by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada and later popularized by Diego Rivera. Today, Catrinas are iconic in Mexican art and celebrations, embodying both reverence for ancestors and a joyful acceptance of mortality.
