How much do cathode engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for cathode engineer in the United States is $92,018.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,500.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cathode Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cathode Engineer, you need a strong background in materials science, electrochemistry, and battery technology, often supported by a degree in chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory instruments, battery testing systems, and data analysis software (such as MATLAB or Origin) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills that set candidates apart. These skills and qualifications ensure the development of high-performance cathode materials and contribute to the advancement of reliable, efficient battery technologies.

What are some common challenges Cathode Engineers face when scaling up battery materials from laboratory to production?

Cathode Engineers often encounter challenges when transitioning new materials from lab-scale synthesis to full-scale manufacturing. These include maintaining material consistency, optimizing synthesis parameters for larger batches, and ensuring that performance and safety standards are met at scale. Additionally, engineers must collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality assurance, and R&D teams to troubleshoot issues such as impurity control, batch variability, and process efficiency. Navigating these complexities requires strong problem-solving skills and effective cross-functional communication.

What are cathode engineers?

Cathode engineers are professionals who specialize in designing, developing, and improving cathode materials used in batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries. Their work involves researching new materials, optimizing performance, and ensuring safety and longevity of battery cells. Cathode engineers often collaborate with scientists and manufacturers to advance battery technology for applications like electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and renewable energy storage.

What is the difference between Cathode Engineer vs Battery Cell Engineer?

AspectCathode EngineerBattery Cell Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D departmentsDesign labs, manufacturing plants, R&D teams
Industry UsageFocuses on cathode material development and optimizationFocuses on overall battery cell design, including cathode, anode, and electrolyte

While both roles involve working with battery technologies, a Cathode Engineer specializes in developing and improving cathode materials, whereas a Battery Cell Engineer oversees the entire battery cell design and integration process. The Cathode Engineer's work is more focused on material science, while the Battery Cell Engineer handles broader cell performance and manufacturing considerations.

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Electrochemical Energy Laboratory at Worcester Polytechnic Institute seeks a Post-Doctoral Fellow to conduct research in lithium-ion battery recycling, cathode material regeneration, sustainable battery materials processing, and electrochemical energy storage. The position will support research projects focused on closed-loop lithium-ion battery recycling, cathode upcycling, solvent-free electrode manufacturing, materials characterization, and electrochemical performance evaluation.
The Post-Doctoral Fellow will work under the supervision of Prof. Yan Wang and collaborate with graduate students, research staff, industry partners, and external collaborators. The position is expected to contribute to experimental design, materials synthesis and processing, battery cell fabrication and testing, data analysis, manuscript preparation, proposal development, and laboratory mentoring.
The Electrochemical Energy Laboratory focuses on electrochemistry-based technologies, including battery materials, battery manufacturing, design, and recycling, as well as recycling and industrial sustainability. Its current research topics include closed-loop lithium-ion battery recycling, cathode materials for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries, battery life extension, solvent-free electrode manufacturing, and broader sustainability-related recycling technologies.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research on lithium-ion battery recycling, cathode material regeneration, cathode upcycling, and sustainable battery materials processing.
  • Design, perform, and optimize experiments involving spent battery material processing, selective metal recovery, cathode precursor synthesis, cathode resynthesis, high-temperature treatment, and electrochemical validation.
  • Synthesize and characterize battery materials using techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, elemental analysis, surface analysis, thermal analysis, and electrochemical testing.
  • Fabricate and evaluate battery cells, including coin cells and, when applicable, pouch cells, to assess capacity, rate capability, cycling stability, impedance behavior, and overall electrochemical performance.
  • Analyze experimental data, maintain accurate research records, prepare technical reports, and present research findings to internal and external collaborators.
  • Prepare and submit peer-reviewed manuscripts, conference abstracts, presentations, invention disclosures, and research progress reports.
  • Assist with proposal development, project planning, milestone tracking, and communication with research sponsors and collaborators.
