How much do cathode anode jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for cathode anode in the United States is $138,276.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $104,000.00 and $165,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cathode Anode Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cathode Anode Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, electrochemistry, and battery technology, typically supported by a degree in chemical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with analytical tools such as scanning electron microscopes (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and battery management systems is common, along with certifications like Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for optimizing battery performance, ensuring safety, and driving innovation in energy storage solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by Cathode Anode Engineers in battery manufacturing environments?

Cathode Anode Engineers often encounter challenges related to material purity, process consistency, and scaling up laboratory results for mass production. Ensuring uniform coating and minimizing contamination are critical, as even minor inconsistencies can lead to significant performance or safety issues in batteries. Additionally, collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as quality control, R&D, and manufacturing—is essential to troubleshoot problems and implement process improvements efficiently. Continuous learning and adaptability are important, as advancements in battery technology frequently introduce new materials and processes.

What are cathode and anode in the context of batteries?

Cathode and anode are the two electrodes found in batteries and other electrochemical cells. The anode is where oxidation occurs and electrons are released, while the cathode is where reduction happens and electrons are accepted. In a battery during discharge, the anode is the negative terminal and the cathode is the positive terminal. The movement of electrons from anode to cathode through an external circuit generates electric current. These terms are also used in other devices like electrolytic cells, where their definitions may switch depending on the direction of current.

What is the cathode working electrode?

In electrochemical jobs involving cathode anode roles, the cathode working electrode is the electrode where reduction reactions occur during operation. It is typically connected to the negative terminal of the power supply and requires knowledge of electrochemical principles, materials, and safety protocols. Understanding the electrode's material properties and environment is essential for proper function and safety in laboratory or industrial settings.

What is the difference between Cathode Anode vs Battery Technician?

AspectCathode AnodeBattery Technician
Required CredentialsTechnical knowledge of electrochemical componentsElectrochemical or electrical certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing plants, R&D facilitiesRepair shops, manufacturing facilities, field service
Industry UsageBattery manufacturing, electronics, energy storageBattery maintenance, repair, testing

While Cathode Anode specialists focus on the design and development of battery components, Battery Technicians handle the installation, maintenance, and repair of batteries. Both roles require knowledge of electrochemical principles, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

Job Title: Product Engineer (Battery Electrode Materials / Coatings)
Location: Somerset, NJ (Onsite)
Type: Contract-to-hire
Hours: 8am-5pm or 9am-6pm (flex)
Pay: $28-$36/hr (depending upon experience)
Overview: A specialty materials company focused on advanced battery materials and nanotechnology - they design and manufacture materials used in lithium-ion and next-generation batteries.
Why this role is different
This is an engineering-forward, hands-on materials role (not a technician position). You'll be working at the intersection of materials science + electrode processing + manufacturing scale-up, with growth potential.
What you'll do
  • Design, develop, and help manufacture battery electrodes, including formulation and processing of:
  • Active material + conductive carbon + binder systems
  • Prepare and optimize powders, dispersions/slurries, and coated films
  • Characterize powders, films, and dispersions (quality, morphology, performance-related properties)
  • Support development of both traditional battery materials and new active materials intended for commercialization
  • Document experiments clearly and collaborate cross-functionally (R&D/manufacturing/customer-facing teams)

Must-haves
  • BS/MS in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Materials Science & Engineering
  • Hands-on experience with powders + slurries/dispersion + coating/film formation (core requirement)
  • Some exposure to battery electrodes (any chemistry is OK)
  • Working knowledge of wet chemistry and/or solid-state chemistry
  • Comfortable with standard lab equipment and hands-on experimental work

Nice-to-haves
  • Electrode processing: slurry mixing, viscosity/rheology, wet coating, tape casting/doctor blade, drying, calendering
  • Battery materials background (Li-ion / Na-ion / solid-state): cathode/anode powders, conductive carbons, solid electrolytes
  • Powder/film characterization: particle size, BET surface area, SEM, XRD, DSC/TGA (or similar)

Key skills
Battery electrode processing
  • Slurry formulation (aqueous and NMP-based), dispersion, deagglomeration
  • Coating (tape casting / doctor blade / roll-to-roll concepts), drying, film uniformity
  • Electrode composition optimization (active material / carbon / binder ratios)
  • Powder and film characterization; particle morphology control

Battery materials
  • Cathode materials (Li-ion / Na-ion): NMC/NCA/LFP/LMO/LNMO (and related oxides/phosphates)
  • Anode materials: graphite (natural/synthetic), hard carbon, silicon-carbon, lithium titanate (LTO)
  • Electrolyte / solid electrolyte materials: polymer/ceramic composite electrolytes; solid-state electrolyte concepts (neicorporation.com)
  • Conductive additives / carbons: conductive carbon black, graphene/advanced carbons (as applicable), activated carbon (neicorporation.com)
  • Binders (common electrode binder systems): PVDF, CMC, SBR (latex), PTFE (as applicable)
  • Typical electrode solvents/process chemicals: NMP (non-aqueous processing), water-based binder processing
