What is a cash job?

Cash jobs refer to employment positions where workers are paid in cash rather than through checks or direct deposit. These jobs are common in sectors such as hospitality, retail, construction, and domestic work. While some cash jobs are legitimate, they may not always provide legal protections or benefits such as health insurance, paid leave, or retirement contributions. It's important to note that both employers and employees are typically required to report cash earnings for tax purposes. Working cash jobs can have implications for job security, taxes, and eligibility for social benefits.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cashier?

To thrive as a Cashier, you need basic math skills, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, cash registers, and digital payment platforms is typically required. Excellent customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills help you stand out in this role. These abilities are crucial for ensuring accurate transactions, minimizing errors, and delivering a positive customer experience.

What are some common challenges cashiers face during busy shifts, and how can they manage them effectively?

Cashiers often encounter high customer volume and long lines during peak hours, which can be stressful and require quick, accurate service. Effective cashiers manage these challenges by staying organized, maintaining a positive attitude, and communicating clearly with customers and team members. Utilizing downtime to prepare their workspace and staying familiar with store policies also helps them handle rush periods smoothly. Teamwork and support from supervisors can make a significant difference during particularly busy times.

Job description

Our Roots, Our Mission

SHS was established in 1914, Southwest Health System, Inc. has a rich history of serving rural communities and has a strong mission to provide the highest quality healthcare to our patients. We offer comprehensive "care close to home", helping people in small towns receive quality operations and services you'd only expect from a big city. By only using the latest technology and employing the best staff, we create a patient experience unlike any other. Our employees love our respectful culture, our excellent compensation package, and our incredible location, making our hospital the place to build dream careers!

Your Impact

As a Cash Poster, you’ll keep Southwest Health System’s revenue cycle moving fast and accurately by recording daily cash receipts across all SHS entities—supporting clean financial reporting and confident followup.
Key responsibilities include:
- Entering and formatting cash receipts (automatic and manual) each business day; weekend/holiday receipts post the next business day
- Researching details needed to complete posting and resolving questionable items through timely follow-up
- Balancing cash posting batches daily and maintaining audit-ready reports
- Staying current on HMS cash posting practices and sharing updates/training with backup staff
- Responding to customer and staff inquiries, covering peers as needed, and following required education
- Maintaining HIPAA compliance and protecting PHI while treating patients and families with respect
Required qualifications/skills:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Knowledge of hospital and physician billing and related regulatory practices; 1 year healthcare billing experience strongly preferred
- Coding/regulatory knowledge preferred; basic computer skills; strong English communication (additional languages a plus)
Apply today to bring precision, service, and momentum to every post.

A Day in Motion

You start the morning by opening the day’s receipts and getting your workspace set for a smooth run—then settle into focused, high-accuracy entry work that keeps the numbers telling the right story. Throughout the day, you switch gears between concentrated posting, quick research to confirm details, and timely answers to “can you double-check this?” questions from teammates. By afternoon, you’re tying out your work so everything balances cleanly, saving the right documentation for audit trails, and noting any process changes to share with backup staff. If the calendar includes mandatory education, you knock it out with the same steady pace—ending the day confident that what came in is captured correctly and securely.
