  • Valid Social Worker License
  • Signed copy of your most recent evaluation or social work internship evaluation (if recent or current graduate)

  • VA Child Abuse Recognition & Intervention Training Certificate
  • Emergency First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (including a hands on CPR skills practice), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training certification

GENERAL PURPOSE This position performs difficult professional work appraising and meeting the sociological and special education needs of students and coordinates attendance and other student services. Work is performed under general supervision. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assesses the home and neighborhood environments of students to determine eligibility for special education services; presenting findings to eligibility committees.
  • Participates in meetings of the school Child Study Team.
  • Conducts interviews to obtain social history information.
  • Prepares reports about assessment interviews.
  • Attends and participates in Child Study Team meetings.
  • Investigates issues which surface through School Referral Forms.
  • Conducts home visits as necessary during assessments and investigations.
  • Reviews student records.
  • Maintains copies of all reports in an orderly fashion.
  • Submits monthly activity and travel reports.
  • Serves on school crisis team.
  • Refers students to, and serves as liaison with, outside agencies such as the social services bureau, juvenile probation, juvenile detention and the juvenile court.
  • Counsels with students and parents concerning living and learning environments.
  • Assists in diagnosing students' special needs.
  • Serves on FAPT (Family Assessment and Planning Team) Team as representative for Chesapeake Schools
  • Provides case management of FAPT cases
  • Administers CANS (Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths) Assessments and other adaptive scales
  • Supervises MSW (Masters of Social Work) interns
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master's Degree in Social Work.
  • At least two years of social work experience.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of the policies and procedures relating to special education placements.
  • Knowledge of special education programs.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Work environment is primarily inside, where the noise and temperature levels are moderate; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
  • This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires walking, and fingering; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and atmospheric conditions.
