Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Clinical Internship

Start Date: Throughout the year as arranged with program
Education: Engaged in advanced year of Master’s degree program in a mental health related field

Time Commitment: 3 days/20 hours per week for average duration of 12 months

Position Summary:

The Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) Therapist Intern will provide a full range of direct and indirect services to young children (from infancy to six years old) and their families. Services include: assessment, treatment planning, Child-Parent Psychotherapy, family therapy, individual child therapy (when child is older and appropriate), ongoing case management, crisis intervention and advocacy. Under supervision, the IECMH Therapist Intern maintains primary case responsibility for assigned caseload, working with families through all phases of treatment using a relational, attachment based, trauma-informed, culturally aware therapy approach. When necessary, the IECMH Therapist Intern provides comprehensive community support activities and collaborates with childcare, school staff, and other service providers significant to the family’s wellbeing. Services may be provided in our clinic, at the client’s home, or via agency-approved telehealth platform. Candidates with ability to conduct therapy services in Spanish language will be given priority.

Responsibilities:

  • Commit to minimum 20 hours/week, including Thursdays from 9am – Noon with some flexibility to accommodate client session schedule.
  • Provides direct clinical and case management services to clients at the appropriate intensity and duration, responsive to individual needs.
  • Completes all clinical and administrative documentation in a timely, accurate manner.
  • Participates in all required meetings and supervision sessions and performs other administrative tasks as required by Clinical Supervisor and Program Manager.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary team approach, according respect to others and maintaining a culturally aware, reflective stance. Understanding of attachment theory, social-emotional development of the young child, experience or interest in using a psychodynamic, dyadic approach to treatment.
  • Must have academic knowledge (e.g. early childhood development course) or professional/personal life experiences in supporting young children and their parents/caregivers.
  • By the end of the first two months of internship, meets minimum productivity expectation of 10 hours/week billable services (face-to-face contact, clinical phone contact).

Qualifications:

  • Must maintain enrollment in a Master's degree program in a mental health related field for duration of internship.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Excellent computer and Microsoft Office skills
  • Unrestricted driver's license and clean driving record with proof of automobile insurance and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Ability to obtain Agency Affiliated Department of Health qualification and National Provider Identification number
