Position Description
Summary
The Carpenter Helper assists Carpenters on job sites. Depending on the state of a construction project, each day of work may require different job skills, physical and environmental demands. The Carpenter Helper will assist the Carpenter in designing, building, installing, and repairing structures, fixtures, and other items using different types of materials including wood steel, and concrete. The duties include using, supplying or holding materials or tools, and cleaning work area and equipment.
Essential Functions
  • Performs daily tasks in a safe manner in accordance with company policies.
  • Gathers materials for workers to handle on job sites.
  • Keeps job sites clean.
  • Builds scaffolding, shoring, and bracing.
  • Cuts lumber to specified dimensions.
  • Holds lumber, metal studs, rebar and other materials in place for fastening or cutting.
  • Assists carpenter or superintendent to establish reference points and lines.
  • Assists in the layout of foundation, building lines and anchor bolts.
  • Assists the carpenter with settings of hollow metal doors and frames.
  • Sets forms for concrete pours in various applications
  • Aligns, straightens, plumbs, and squares forms for installations.
  • Places concrete for foundations, slabs, sidewalks, pits, and walls.
  • Unloads materials from trucks.
  • Maintains a safe jobsite.
  • Continuously works to improve skills and complete tasks in an expedient manner for future advancement.

Position Requirements
Skills
  • Good knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction
  • Uses mathematics to solve problems that are job related.
  • Determines the kind of tools and equipment that the Carpenter will be using to do the job.
  • Beginning to understand reading of blueprints.
  • Can read a tape measure or find measurements as instructed by the Carpenter.

Physical Demands
The position lifts heavy objects, walks and stands for long periods of time and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects; using abdominal and lower back muscles. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. Lifts and carries 20 - 70 pounds (i.e. 4 x 8 feet sheet plywood, 5-gallon bucket, nail apron, ladder, etc.). Climbs ladders up to heights of 30 feet. Pulls materials weighing up to 40 pounds. Pushes objects weighing up to 90 pounds. Kneels, crouches, and stoops continuously. Stands, working with tools from a height of waist to overhead continuously. Uses both hands continuously to perform duties requiring a strong, steady grasp of tools and materials. Maintains static grasp of tools weighing up to 30 pounds.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One to five years of carpentry experience.
  • Must be willing to submit to a Drug Screen and Background Check
  • Must be eligible for work in the United States.
