What is a carpenter assistant?

Carpenter Assistants are entry-level workers who help carpenters with tasks such as measuring materials, cutting wood, carrying supplies, and cleaning up job sites. They support skilled carpenters in the construction, repair, and installation of building frameworks and structures. Carpenter Assistants may also operate basic tools and equipment under supervision and learn the trade through hands-on experience. This role is ideal for individuals interested in gaining practical skills in carpentry and potentially advancing to a full carpenter position.

What does a carpenter assistant do?

Carpenter assistants, also known as carpenter helpers, provide support to the primary carpenters on a project. In this role, you may review the blueprints and plans for the finished product with the lead carpenters, then you perform tasks under their supervision. Your job duties may include measuring lengths, cutting wood, and holding beams while they are secured into place. Carpenter assistants typically do not work on the main parts of the project, such as communicating with the client and establishing the start of the structure. Many carpenter assistants are apprentices who are training to become full-time carpenters, but some assistants are hired in temporary roles for companies that need extra people on staff for larger projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a carpenter assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Carpenter Assistant, you need basic carpentry knowledge, manual dexterity, and familiarity with construction safety protocols, often obtained through on-the-job training or vocational courses. Experience using hand tools, power tools, and equipment like saws and drills is essential, and OSHA safety certification is often preferred. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to follow instructions make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.

Job Description

Join a fast-growing manufacturer of custom-engineered electrical equipment as a carpenter supporting production and shipping operations. You will build custom-sized pallets, prepare shipments, and perform general labor and assembly tasks throughout the shop using a variety of hand and power tools. This role suits someone who enjoys physically demanding work, can thrive in a hot, fast-paced environment, and takes pride in producing high-quality, safe, and accurate work.

.

Responsibilities

  • Build custom-sized pallets by cutting wood with saws and assembling boards according to instructions and specifications.
  • Measure and cut wood accurately using a tape measure and appropriate tools to ensure pallets and assemblies meet required dimensions.
  • Assemble and secure pallets and other wooden structures using hand tools and power tools such as nail guns, drills, and saws.
  • Prepare shipments by palletizing products, shrink wrapping orders, and ensuring loads are stable, safe, and ready for transport.
  • Perform general labor and general assembly tasks around the shop to support production of custom-engineered electrical gear.
  • Use hand tools and power tools to complete various shop tasks as needed, including basic mechanical and assembly work.
  • Follow blueprints, schematics, bills of materials, and written instructions when assembling or preparing materials.
  • Assist with installation-related tasks and basic troubleshooting as needed within the production environment.
  • Work safely in a busy industrial setting, following all safety procedures and wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and contribute to the overall cleanliness and order of the facility.
  • Work extended hours, typically 11-hour shifts, 5–6 days per week, to support high production demand.
  • Collaborate with general assemblers, electrical assemblers, warehouse staff, and other shop personnel to meet production goals.

.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of manual labor experience in industrial, construction, or similar environments.
  • Proficiency in measuring and cutting wood accurately using a tape measure and saws.
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure confidently and consistently.
  • Experience using hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Background in physically demanding work such as construction, industrial labor, roofing, landscaping, concrete, or road work.
  • Ability to work in extremely hot environments and remain productive and safe.
  • Willingness and ability to work long hours, typically 11-hour shifts, 5–6 days per week.
  • Experience with general labor and construction-related tasks, including framing or carpentry.
  • Capability to follow instructions, schematics, blueprints, and bills of materials for assembly tasks.
  • Strong initiative and reliability, with the ability to work every day of the week as needed.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced production shop with high activity and multiple ongoing tasks.

.

Why Work Here?

You will join a rapidly expanding organization that invests heavily in its people and community. The company offers significant opportunities for growth, with the potential to move into leadership roles quickly as you prove yourself. The culture emphasizes taking care of employees through regular catered meals, family-oriented values, and frequent community events on weekends. As a second chance employer, the organization is committed to providing opportunities for individuals to rebuild and advance their careers. Ongoing community outreach and a supportive, team-focused atmosphere create a workplace where you can develop your skills, build a long-term career, and feel proud of the impact you make.

.

Work Environment

The role is based in a large, approximately 600,000-square-foot facility in Pasadena, TX. This is a new, very clean, and organized production facility that operates as one of several sites, including weld, machine, and powder coating shops at other locations. The primary teams in this building include general assemblers, electrical assemblers, warehouse staff, and shop personnel supporting production of custom-engineered electrical gear. The environment is non–climate controlled with open bay doors and numerous fans, so temperatures can be high, especially in warmer seasons. The production shop is very busy and fast-paced, requiring consistent focus and physical stamina. You will use a variety of hand tools and power tools daily, as well as work around industrial equipment and materials. The standard day shift runs Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., typically totaling 11-hour days, 5–6 days per week. A night shift (Monday through Friday, 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) may also be available, with similar hours and workload. The dress code requires steel-toe footwear, jeans, a work shirt, and safety glasses, along with any additional personal protective equipment required for specific tasks.
