Job description

Transportation & Logistics Claims Specialist / Developing Adjuster

Position Summary

The Transportation & Logistics Claims Specialist / Developing Adjuster will support the SPG Cargo & Logistics Claims & Recoveries Department in the handling, investigation, documentation, and resolution of transportation, logistics, cargo, broker liability, and related claims.

This role is designed for a transportation professional with strong logistics, carrier compliance, freight claims, risk management, and carrier-vetting experience who will develop into a licensed claims adjuster. The position will support the Transportation & Logistics claims function by assisting with claim investigations, document review, carrier and broker file development, coverage and liability issue-spotting, claim communication, and resolution strategy under the supervision of the Head of Claims & Recoveries.

The successful candidate must obtain a Texas adjuster license within six months of hire. Until properly licensed, the candidate will work under supervision and will not independently issue coverage positions, make final claim determinations, exercise settlement authority, or direct litigation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the handling and development of Transportation & Logistics claims, including broker liability, carrier liability, cargo loss, temperature-controlled freight issues, theft, transportation accidents, and service-related claims.

  • Gather, review, and organize key claim materials, including bills of lading, rate confirmations, tenders, carrier packets, COIs, insurance documentation, FMCSA records, carrier-vetting materials, safety history, claims correspondence, invoices, photographs, police reports, and other supporting documents.

  • Support initial claim investigations by identifying the involved parties, transportation chain, carrier assignment, broker role, contractual documents, shipment details, claimed damages, and potential liability issues.

  • Assist in evaluating carrier compliance, carrier qualification, safety indicators, insurance status, operating authority, and other risk factors relevant to broker-liability and negligent-selection claims.

  • Work with insureds, brokers, carriers, claimants, defense counsel, surveyors, and internal team members to obtain missing information and move claims forward.

  • Prepare claim summaries, factual chronologies, document checklists, and initial analysis for review by the Head of Claims & Recoveries, or other assigned adjuster.

  • Assist with reserve recommendations, settlement evaluations, coverage issue-spotting, and claim strategy under the supervision of a licensed adjuster.

  • Support litigated claim files by helping gather carrier-vetting materials, contracts, communications, pleadings, discovery materials, defense counsel updates, and other litigation-support documents.

  • Maintain claim system accuracy, diary discipline, documentation standards, and timely file updates.

  • Develop technical claims knowledge in transportation, logistics, cargo, broker liability, coverage, reserving, litigation management, and claims best practices.

Licensing Requirement

  • Candidate must obtain a Texas adjuster license within six months of hire.

  • If not licensed at the time of hire, candidate must begin the licensing process within 30 days and complete a material licensing milestone within 90 days, such as completing required coursework, scheduling or sitting for the licensing exam, completing fingerprinting, or submitting the license application.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • The ideal candidate will have strong transportation, freight, logistics, carrier compliance, cargo claims, or brokerage operations experience. Experience with carrier vetting, FMCSA compliance, carrier qualification, freight claims, cargo liability, theft, temperature-controlled freight, and transportation risk management is strongly preferred.

  • The candidate should be highly organized, detail-oriented, comfortable with documents and timelines, and capable of communicating professionally with insureds, brokers, carriers, counsel, and internal stakeholders.

  • A current adjuster license is preferred but not required if the candidate has the right transportation/logistics background and commits to obtaining the Texas adjuster license within the required timeframe.

Salary Transparency
