What is a cardiovascular service line manager?

A Cardiovascular Service Line Manager is a healthcare professional responsible for overseeing and coordinating all aspects of cardiovascular services within a hospital or healthcare system. This role involves managing clinical operations, budgets, staff, quality improvement initiatives, and strategic planning for cardiovascular programs. The manager works closely with physicians, nurses, and administrators to ensure high-quality patient care and efficient use of resources. Their goal is to improve patient outcomes, enhance operational performance, and maintain compliance with healthcare regulations. They also play a key role in developing new cardiovascular services and implementing best practices.

Familiarity with hospital information systems, data analytics tools, and regulatory compliance standards is essential, along with certifications such as FACHE or clinical credentials like RN or RT. Leadership, strategic planning, and effective communication are critical soft skills for driving team performance and fostering collaboration across departments. The Director Cardiovascular Service Line provides strategic, operational, and financial leadership for the full continuum of cardiovascular care across the health system, including inpatient and outpatient cardiology, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery and vascular medicine, interventional and structural cardiac programs, electrophysiology, peripheral vascular interventions, cardiac and vascular imaging, and cardiac rehabilitation. This role partners closely with physician leadership (Service Line Medical Director, often representing both cardiology and vascular/cardiac surgery), nursing leadership, and hospital administration in a dyad model to drive clinical quality, patient experience, growth, and financial performance across all sites of care. The Director is accountable for translating system strategy into an integrated service line plan that spans the inpatient, ambulatory, and post-acute cardiovascular care journey across cardiology and surgical/vascular disciplines.

  • Serve as the operating leader for the cardiology service line.
  • Partner in a physician-administrator dyad with the Service Line Medical Director to set and execute service line strategy.
  • Develop and execute multi-year service line growth plans, including program development (e.g., structural heart, advanced heart failure, electrophysiology, complex peripheral and vascular surgery), market expansion, and outreach clinic strategy.
  • Own the service line's annual operating and capital budgets; monitor volumes, revenue, expense, and productivity, and lead corrective action plans to meet financial targets.
  • Oversee daily operations of cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, and vascular labs, non-invasive cardiac and vascular imaging and diagnostics, cardiology and vascular surgery clinics, and cardiac rehabilitation programs.
  • Lead service line quality, safety, and patient experience initiatives in collaboration with clinical leaders, including registry participation, accreditation readiness, and core measure performance.
  • Drive physician engagement, recruitment planning, and alignment strategies across cardiology and cardiac/vascular surgery, in partnership with medical staff leadership.
  • Manage service line staffing strategy, workforce planning, and leadership development for direct and matrixed reports across multiple departments and sites.
  • Lead or support service line contracting strategy, including supply chain/value analysis for cardiovascular devices and implants, in partnership with supply chain and finance.
  • Represent the service line in payer strategy discussions, bundled payment and value-based care initiatives, and managed care contract negotiations as needed.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance across all cardiology sites, including CMS Conditions of Participation, and applicable state regulations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with referring physicians, community partners, and regional outreach sites to support network integration and patient access.
  • Lead change management and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Report service line performance, risks, and strategic initiatives to system leadership and the board as required.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Nursing, or related field.
