Position Summary

Boynton Health, https://boynton.umn.edu/, is seeking a strong, accomplished clinical medical leader to serve as the Executive Medical Director. This leader will champion student and patient-centered responsive health care through a team-based approach. This position will provide strategic direction and oversight for clinical services and collaborate with other leaders to foster, promote, and engage in health and wellness activities at Boynton and across the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. The Executive Medical Director will leverage the clinic's strengths and demonstrate a commitment to innovation & effectiveness. Boynton Health is looking for clinical leadership that focuses on the current and future state of health services that meets the needs of all students.

Areas of Responsibility

This role is structured into two core areas of focus: Executive Leadership (65%) and Direct Patient Care in Urgent and Primary Care (35%). This position supervises the clinical directors of primary care, psychiatry, optometry, allied health and pharmacy. The Executive Medical Director serves as a dyad with the Executive Director and reports directly to the Executive Vice President of Health Affairs.  

1. Executive Leadership (65%)

The Executive Medical Director provides clinical vision, strategic oversight, and administrative leadership to ensure safe, high-quality, and culturally responsive care across Boynton Health's operations.

Strategic Planning, Budget, and Program Development
  • Campus Student Health Champion: Partner with the Executive Director to serve as a prominent campus champion for student and community health and wellness across the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.
  • Strategic Initiatives: Collaborate with the Boynton Health Executive Team to develop and guide strategic clinical initiatives aimed at enhancing clinical services and achieving superior quality outcomes.
  • Service Line Expansion: Work with clinical directors to identify growth opportunities and direct service line and department development across primary care, gynecology, gender care, optometry, dental, physical therapy, nutrition, and infection prevention.
  • Innovative Services: Implement innovative healthcare services and interventions to meet the campus community's needs, specifically designing partnerships with campus leaders and student groups to target and support underserved students.
  • Financial Management: Participate in the annual budgeting process to ensure appropriate resource allocation for clinical functions and patient care. Ensure that clinical service lines meet the revenue and expense targets established in the budget in collaboration with the Operations and Finance leadership teams
  • Performance Metric Alignment: Establish annual unit performance goals alongside the Executive Director and Executive Team, and lead the evaluation of prior-year achievements.
  • Staffing Optimization: Provide expert consultation on appropriate staffing ratios for clinical providers.
Clinical Care Oversight and Supervision
  • Evidence-Based Practice: Oversee the development, review, and implementation of clinical guidelines, protocols, and evidence-based practice approaches.
  • Concern and Incident Resolution: Direct the review and resolution of clinical concerns, patient grievances, medical errors, and infection prevention reports.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient care and improve workflow dynamics.
  • Technological Innovation: Sponsor and champion upgrades to the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and other technology systems to drive clinic efficiency.
  • Continuity of Care: Cultivate collaborative relationships with local hospitals and external healthcare providers to streamline referral pathways, discharge planning, and continuity of care.
  • Infectious Disease & Crisis Consultation: Provide authoritative clinical consultation and expertise as needed during infectious disease outbreaks or campus-wide medical crises.
  • Performance Management: Direct provider and staff supervision in alignment with the University of Minnesotas Performance Management philosophy. Provide annual work plans, track metrics, conduct reviews, and deliver timely coaching and feedback to medical providers.
Campus Public Health Response
  • Population Health Management: Design and execute clinical programs and services in coordination with the Executive Director to support the personal and public health needs of the University community.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Lead clinical efforts and emergency preparedness in response to public health emergencies, infectious diseases, natural disasters, or student medical crises with the Executive Director. Actively liaise with local and state health agencies,  the Office of Health Affairs, the Office for Student Affairs, and the Health Emergency Response Office (HERO), serving in Boynton's Incident Command Structure during emergencies.
Quality and Safety Improvement
  • Quality Metrics: Oversee, monitor, and meet defined clinical quality and safety metrics in partnership with the Executive Director.
  • Performance Improvement Projects: Initiate, champion, and sponsor annual clinical quality improvement projects.
  • Safety & Committee Work: Actively participate in and lead committees dedicated to identifying and resolving patient and staff safety issues.
  • Accreditation Standards: Maintain readiness for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) by leading and supporting workflow updates that align with accreditation standards.
  • Clinical Quality & Peer Review: Oversee clinical quality reviews and provider peer review processes, delegating a clinical leader to head the peer review committee.
  • Patient Privacy Advocacy: Model and enforce a strict commitment to patient privacy in compliance with state, federal (FERPA/HIPAA), and University regulations.
Practice Leadership
  • Service Line Representation: Attend and provide visible clinical leadership at service line and provider meetings.
  • Interdisciplinary Leadership: Guide and actively participate in clinical quality or interdisciplinary consultation meetings.
  • Provider Mentorship: Monitor and mentor providers in areas of responsibility, focusing on clinical performance, professional staff interactions, documentation standards, and collaborative behavior.
  • Professional Development: Facilitate leadership and continuing professional development opportunities for clinical leaders and medical staff.
