Job description

Position SummaryThe Cardiac Monitor Technician supports the nursing team by coordinating and monitoring cardiac telemetry activities on the nursing unit. This role observes cardiac rhythms, identifies potential and lethal rhythms, communicates urgent findings to the appropriate nurse or caregiver, and maintains accurate monitoring documentation.The Cardiac Monitor Technician works in a fast-paced, high-stress environment while managing multiple priorities and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, caregivers, families, visitors, physicians, and members of the health care team.Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor cardiac rhythms for assigned patients and identify potential or lethal rhythms for timely communication to the appropriate caregiver.
  • Review routine and abnormal cardiac rhythm strips and document findings according to unit protocols.
  • Track patients on and off telemetry and communicate relevant information to nursing staff.
  • Manage telemetry assignments, monitoring data, unit logs, and telemetry census information.
  • Maintain required forms and supplies related to cardiac monitoring and report discrepancies as appropriate.
  • Assist with unit operations, including ordering supplies and supporting scheduling and monitor technician coverage.
  • Prepare monitoring systems and paperwork for patient admissions, transfers, and departures.
  • Enter admission and transfer information into the monitoring system prior to patient arrival when applicable.
  • Proactively identify the need for monitoring coverage and provide assistance to the nursing team.
  • Operate cardiac monitoring equipment, computers, printers, and related software.
  • Report equipment or system malfunctions and assist in maintaining continuity of cardiac monitoring services during system or computer downtime.
  • Maintain competency in required areas, including age-specific competencies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of a cardiac monitoring course within one year of hire.
  • Previous experience working with computers and cardiac monitoring preferred.
  • No licensure or certification required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to remain focused amid multiple, complex activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from varied backgrounds.
  • Ability to recognize urgent cardiac rhythm findings and communicate information promptly to the appropriate caregiver.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, caregivers, physicians, and members of the health care team.
