Job description

At Carbon, our mission goes beyond 3D printing. We are enabling creators everywhere to make what the world needs, right now. Our company is built on the idea that diverse fields of study must come together to solve intractable problems. We have grand ambitions to create technology that will influence industry around the world. You will be joining a diverse team with a vibrant culture, where team success is as important as celebrating individual contributions.
Help us change the world and we will help you change yours.
Working at the intersection of hardware, software, and molecular science, Carbon is committed to delivering on the promise of 3D printing, enabling commercial customers to go beyond basic prototyping to produce products with real-world applications. With our cutting-edge technology, we are seeing customers innovate and manufacture parts with unmatched reliability, speed, and quality.
You'll be joining a close-knit team, working with experts in 3D geometry, web technologies, Linux, and everything in between. We've had fun team activities where we escape rooms (real and virtual), play games, and cook delicious food. We also have a variety of employee-started communities at Carbon: baking, bootcamp, yoga, gaming, book club, diversity groups, and many more that you can participate in and maybe even start your own!
This role is based in our Sunnyvale, CA location and is onsite Mon - Friday. This role is not eligible for current Visa sponsorship.
You will:
  • Build High-Impact Web Applications: You will design and ship customer-facing web apps that integrate with our Tier-0 services (Fleet Management, Auth, and Core APIs), helping keep the foundational systems that power our global printer network resilient as we add new features on top.
  • Create Modern APIs: Design and build the REST and gRPC interfaces that power our web applications and expose platform capabilities to other teams. You will care about clean data contracts, thoughtful versioning, and building services others can rely on and build on.
  • Scale Web-to-Backend Systems: Own significant portions of our front-end and cloud integration. You will work with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and scalable database architectures to build and grow the "Web-to-Edge" bridge, keeping the platform responsive as data volume and printer count climb.
  • Have Deep React Expertise: Bring very strong React and modern front-end skills to complex, data-heavy interfaces. We are not just building dashboards; we are building control systems that require thoughtful state management and high-performance rendering.
  • Own Features End-to-End: Take major initiatives from design through production. You will contribute to architectural decisions, select the right technologies for the job, and ship code that scales with the business.
  • Bring Agency and a Learning Mindset: Jump in where the work is. When a problem crosses into an unfamiliar part of the stack, you are the kind of engineer who picks it up, learns quickly, and gets it done rather than waiting for the "right" person. Curiosity and range matter here as much as depth.
  • Collaborate and Mentor: Partner closely with product managers to translate customer needs into robust software designs. Support more junior engineers through code review, pairing, and design feedback, and bring your perspective to team-wide design reviews.

You have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong React and modern front-end skills, including deep experience with component architecture, state management, and performance optimization
  • Proven experience building and shipping web applications that integrate with backend services (REST/gRPC APIs, auth, real-time data)
  • Experience designing and building production APIs (REST, gRPC, or similar) that other applications or clients consume
  • Experience scaling a web application in production, whether that means performance, larger data volumes, or a growing user base
  • Working knowledge of at least one modern backend language (Go, Python, Java, C++, TypeScript/Node, etc.); comfortable reading and contributing to backend code when needed
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP preferred; AWS or Azure equivalent) and modern database architectures
  • Strong communication, debugging, and problem-solving skills
  • Curiosity and willingness to work outside your primary stack when the work requires it

You do not need to match every listed expectation to apply for this position. Here at Carbon, we know that diverse perspectives foster the innovation we need to be successful, and we are committed to building a team that encompasses a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and skills.
At Carbon, we look at the person holistically and carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining salary. The compensation bracket for this position is $158,400 - $237,600 (per year). In order to maintain equitable internal pay practices, we aim to hire new employees near the midpoint of $198,000, taking into account your experience, work location, certifications, and the unique skills you bring to the role.
Carbon also offers to our eligible employees a comprehensive total rewards package that includes equity, benefits, and time off programs. For details on our total rewards package, visit https://www.carbon3d.com/about/life-at-carbon.
