Job Summary:
As a Car Repairman, you'll be hands-on building, repairing, and inspecting railway cars to ensure they meet federal, industry, and company standards. Your work directly impacts the safety and efficiency of rail operations, making you an essential part of the team. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys mechanical work, values precision, and takes pride in maintaining equipment that keeps railroads moving safely.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform inspection and maintenance of car components ensuring compliance with all federal, state, company and regulatory standards
  • Accurately document repairs and maintain required records companying with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations, company policies and all other applicable guidelines
  • Repair, weld, remove, or replace defective components such as wheels, safety appliances, truck and brake equipment, couplers, yokes, draft gears, and air brake valves or perform other car repair-related tasks as required
  • Perform rerailing and complete repair activities as required including in emergency situations
  • Repair, remove, or replace components using jacks, blocks, cutting and heating torches, and other hand tools
  • Inspect, measure, and secure lading in open-top cars
  • Operate forklifts, light cranes, and car-moving equipment
  • Collaborate with others on repair strategies and project planning
  • Interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and repair instructions
  • Assist with projects and perform other duties as assigned

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
  • Full-time (40 plus hours weekly)
  • Varying schedule in a 24/7 work environment that includes nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call as needed
  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions
  • Walking on uneven surfaces and climbing ladders and equipment always ensuring three points of contact in varying environmental conditions
  • Working at elevated heights of 18 feet or greater while adhering to fall protection safety guidelines
  • Frequent lifting of equipment and tools that could occasionally be up to 75 pounds
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, squat and twist as necessary while working on equipment
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Occasional travel may be required

Skills and Experience:
  • At least 2 years of related work experience is a plus
  • 4-year journeyman carman is a plus
  • Welding experience / certification is plus
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate via radio or in person
  • Possess situational awareness and decision-making abilities to respond effectively in a safety sensitive environment

Required Education and Credentials:
  • High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Valid driver's license; CDL is a plus

Employment Requirements:
  • Pre-employment physical, hearing, and vision medical review
  • May be subject to federally mandated drug and alcohol testing including pre-employment drug screening
  • Background screening including criminal and motor vehicle driving history

Relocation:
Must live within 50 miles of assigned location or be willing to relocate. Relocation assistance is not offered for this position.
